Back in late October i had begun reading through the book "TCP/IP Illustrated Vol 1: The Protocols"
It's basically the encyclopedia and history book of computer networking, and it's a pretty daunting read, but still i find it super fascinating!
the book begins describing about how the very concept of networking is related to telephony and how that works (calls are established by completing physical circuits) and describing how networking essentially functions in the same way, but virtually, meaning, a circuit is closed over a physical connection, but it is abstracted. It can be kind of tough to explain and it took me a bit to grasp it, but i found it very valuable to know this about how networking functions :3

how the tables have turned indeed!
funnily enough the book also detials how the whole design of the OSI network layers is also based on the design principles used for how operating systems were made, because the people who originally made it were most familiar with this!
Quote:
"Many of the individuals responsible for implementing the protocols for the
ARPANET were familiar with the software structuring of operating systems, and
an influential paper describing the “THE” multiprogramming system [D68] advo
cated the use of a hierarchical structure as a way to deal with verification of the
logical soundness and correctness of a large software implementation. Ultimately,
this contributed to a design philosophy for networking protocols involving mul
tiple layers of implementation (and design). This approach is now called layering
and is the usual approach to implementing protocol suites"
- TCP/IP Illustrated Vol 1, page 8
i would dare to say that spiritually, practical implementations of TCP/IP are chimera mutant of both their ancestors (telephones) and their bretheren! (OSes).
Funny what ends up happening when we science-contort the planet's elements to our will and shock them into strange patterns to do our bidding!! it's basically our world's version of magic.
conclusion: networking is magic <3
