Thirteen.
All three parents looked stricken by my last statement, with Vikan starting to cry as she embraced Kinan. Yezhef moved to get past me into the room, but I placed a hand on my sidearm and adopted a defensive posture. “I warn you, Yezhef-sir,” I said. “This room is to be searched for evidence, and any attempt by you to enter will result in your detention for interfering with the Constabulary.”
“Yezhef,” Vikan sobbed, “please.” The male stared at me for a subfraction more before rejoining his mates on the couch in front of the hearth fire. I remained at the doorway and directed the tactical team hovering over the dwelling to withdraw.
The parents’ expressions were a disturbing mixture of shock, disbelief and sorrow. Having a [spouse] and lover murdered, and then to learn that one of their children might have killed him, was [emotionally-shattering] in my experience. They were clinging to each other as if their love was the only thing in the universe capable of anchoring them. It may have been; I had seen it before, but it still had a power that [awed] me. I was certain that my mate Yezhim and I felt the same way about our relationship.
A crime scene unit arrived, not the same pair that had discovered the murder weapon, and I made way to allow them to search the room. Vikan, Yezhef and Kinan had left the hearth area to get something to drink from the kitchen. After several fractions, one of the crime scene technicians approached me. “Captain-Inspector?” she asked, and when I acknowledged her, she lowered her voice and said, “A set of tools has been found.”
I matched her voice, keeping my eyes on the kitchen entrance. “Tools that could be used to modify a drone?”
“Yes, Sir.”
“Very well. Package them and all other evidence, including her [personal access device]. Override the house computer and lock this door to prevent unauthorized entry.” The female gestured acknowledgment and after another fraction she and her partner left the room. I stepped out, and the door was secured.
Kinan-sir approached me after wiping tears from his fur and blowing mucus from his nostrils into a [facial tissue]. “You – you have secured her room?”
“Yes, g’Zherin-sir,” I replied. “I ask(respectfully) that you do not try to forcibly open the door. The override will be removed when the investigation is over.”
“Understood,” Kinan-sir said. “I – we – are sorry, Captain.”
I rested my hand on his shoulder. “You and your family have my sympathies, g’Zherin-sir. None of you have anything to be apologetic about.” I left the house and sat in my vehicle for a moment before directing it to return to the station.
My padd, linked to the vehicle’s communications node, signaled an incoming call. “T’Gath.”
It was the station’s lieutenant. “Captain-Inspector, Veridh g’Zherin was apprehended at the spaceport. She was attempting to leave the planet.”
“Destination?”
“Lazchal.”
That interested me. She had tried to reach the planet with the Combined Services induction base. “Was there any difficulty in her apprehension?”
“She attempted to assault a constable,” the lieutenant replied. “She was stunned and restrained. She is being brought to the station for questioning.”
“Very good.” I thought for a moment before contacting the g’Zherin [domicile]. Vikan-madam accepted the call and I said, “My apologies(sincere), but I must ask several more questions.”
“Yes, Captain-Inspector?” she asked.
“Had you noted any changes in Veridh-[young-madam]’s behavior? I will tell you that she seemed reluctant to speak to me during her initial questioning.” I waited while she searched her memories.
“Yes,” she finally said. “Veridh seemed withdrawn around Yifan. I was troubled but thought that it was due to his insults toward her.”
“How long ago was this?” I asked. “When did you first observe it?”
Another long moment. “About twelve years ago.”
“Thank you(respectful), Vikan-madam.” I ended the contact and thought as the vehicle continued to the station.
Was I certain? The evidence pointed at Veridh-[young-madam], with the added fact that she had abruptly decided to leave the planet. I was fortunate that she had not succeeded in doing so; bringing her back to Grevchak would require General v’Radha to make a request through channels to the training center. That would take nearly a month* by my estimation, and I wanted to end this quickly.
I had returned to the station and was conferring with the lieutenant when my [personal access device] alerted me to an incoming call. “Excuse me(respectful), Lieutenant,” I said, and activated the device. “Captain t’Gath.”
“Sir, we have brought the detainee in. Scans for weapons have found nothing. A search of her body and clothes have also not found anything.”
“Very good. Place her in an interview room, please.” I deactivated the device and stood. “Please let me know if the crime scene technicians discover anything, Lieutenant.” He agreed and I left the office.
I went to my borrowed office and spent several moments stretching and concentrating on my breathing before going to the interview room. There was a constable in her white duty uniform positioned at the door; there would be another one inside with g’Zherin-[young-madam]. “Have you had any trouble with her?” I asked.
“No, Captain,” she replied. “She was cooperative after she woke up from the stun.”
“Understood. Is the constable she attacked all right?”
She smiled. “He will likely have a few bruises. She did not use her claws or tailspur.” I thanked her and she let me enter the room.
I glanced up as the door closed, aware that [audio-visual] recording devices were in each corner of the ceiling. The constable was standing against the wall facing the detainee. There was a [biodegradable] cup and an empty [biodegradable] plate on the table in front of her, indicating that she had eaten. I approved, dismissed the constable and sat down facing Veridh-[young-madam].
