The sad thing is that an NPC like Gummigoo was able to move past what his purpose was supposed to be and was ready to become his own person with the help of his new friend Pomni and, most likely, everybody else if he was given a chance.

Caine dug his heels into the ground, refused to move past his purpose despite the fact that it was actively making him miserable (and everybody else around him) and...well...things went downhill for him very fast, as one can see.
