I think Zol Shia from Monster Hunter Wilds did a better job at executing on the idea Pokemon was going for with Mega Absol/Mega Absol Z than Pokemon did.
I don't particularly love Mega Absol Z.
I don't hate it. I think it's better than many of the other megas. But I also don't think pokemon was able to execute on their idea as well as they wanted to. It seems to be meant to contrast the angelic purity of Mega Absol by being a darker, twisted version. I mean, it literally has twisted flesh or fur coming out on one side, it feels kinda obvious, no? It's a cool idea in theory.
But I think they were limited by needing to make it a 3d model. The 2d art looks nice, but the 3d model only really works from a few specific angles. Plus they were really forcing that Z motif with the horn and whatever the hell was going on with the tail...
Contrast that with Zoh Shia: it's a monster that starts as with an angelic motif with "feathers" of white crystal that burn away to a twisted, corrupted mass. It's even more apparent on the armor set. Literal wings and gross pulsing flesh - a much better execution of the idea than Mega Absol Z. (Though I also recognize that Pokemon is a game for all ages and gross pulsing flesh isn't good for that.)
I've had this idea of portraying a Zoh-Shia-themed Absol (or Absol-themed Zoh Shia) for a few weeks now. I've avoided mentioning it to anyone or searching up others' thoughts on it because I wanted to exercise my design skills a bit and see what I could do mostly on my own. I'll admit that outside of the head it's 90% Zoh Shia. But hey, it's a good design.
I want to do a painting with this idea, but I wanted to get the design solidified first so just a fancy sketch for now.
I spent like 40 minutes on Online Single Player fighting Zoh Shia earlier just so I could take better reference images of phase 2 than what are available online. Unfortunately, MHWilds doesn't let you move the camera while paused, and the toggle to hide the hunter and scoutflies seemed to be broken on my installation, so they still weren't great. I had to piece things together from 20 different screenshots all with different points of blur on them and only 1/3rd of Zoh Shia in each. This isn't really relevant to the art. I just wanted to complain about Monster Hunter Wilds lacking a good photo mode.
