What is Broken Butterfly?
Broken Butterfly is a passion project that I've been working on for the better part of a decade. Ever since I started making anthropomorphic/furry characters I've been working hard at world building, fleshing out character back stories, coming up with concept art and various scenarios.
"What is it about?"
BB is a webcomic focused around characters. It is a transformation based story where humans and an alien race of beings known as the 'fenhorre' have lived together here on earth for thousands of years. The fenhorre have the ability to transform between their anthropomorphic animal or 'fen' form, to a human form to allow for mating compatibility with humans.
"What kind of tone are you going for?"
The majority of the comic will be focused on humor. I want this to be a light-hearted examination of the culture I live in. But of course, there will be more serious moments. And I'll be doing my best to let those moments breathe when the time comes. There's going to be a lot of nuance that needs to be addressed, and topics that need to be approached with utmost care and respect.
"What are the themes?"
BB will be relying a lot on themes of identity, presentation, and learning to love yourself and those around you. There are strong LGBTQIA allegories, as well as outright representation.
"What are your goals for this comic?"
I want to be able to represent as many types of people as I can. As a way to diversify my writing, and drawing abilities. This means making sure to vary body types, personalities, and backgrounds.
"Who are the main characters?"
The plan isn't really to have a 'main' character, or characters, but the cover pairing follows Melissa (left) and Amy (right) as they navigate their young adult lives and their marriage to be. I chose these two to start, since Amy's backstory will be a good vehicle for explaining this world and the rules surrounding it.
"What kind of structure will this comic follow?"
We will be starting with a story arc following Amy on her first day as a teacher. Once that's complete, there will be pages and small arcs introducing other characters, their backstories and concepts. There will also be one off joke pages, or small mini-arcs involving other characters here and there. Some of them may even include 'me' being the author and changing something in the world for my own whims. Those pages will be purely fan service, and likely not even canon.
"Why have you been holding on to material for almost 10 years?"
The problem I ran into is I had far too many ideas, and not a solid vehicle to progress towards them. Now that I have a good idea, and a lot of assets and material, I feel now is a good time to try and push forward with actually releasing this stuff. I'm not getting any younger, and tomorrow's not promised. I have a story to tell, and I want to finally share it.
"What demographic are you targeting with this?"
Furries, and people who are into transformation stories, as well as the larger LGBTQIA community. Due to the themes and occasional adult content, this web comic is *NOT* recommended for anyone under 18 years of age. Most pages will be fine, but pages with strong themes/nudity/sexually suggestive content will be marked as mature.
"What is your release schedule?"
Initially I'm trying for weekly, but knowing me I'm going to end up slipping once my page buffer runs out. So I'll probably switch to a bi-weekly schedule if the workload becomes too much. So for now? Monday. In the future? Likely to be every other Monday.
"Why does the art style change between some pages?"
As I mentioned above I've been hoarding ideas and material for the better part of a decade. I would come up with ideas that I just *had* to put on paper, and then realize "OH! I should make this part of the actual story!" only to realize, that page fits in way further down the road, and now I have to make pages to explain how we got to that scenario. So some pages were done upwards of 8 years ago. Some of them needing to be re-written to fit the new narrative as it happens, or even re-drawing some assets entirely. Sometimes it's just not going to be worth it to completely re-draw/texture some pages, so there will be a noticeable dip and bump in quality. Sorry about that.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk, and I hope you enjoy "Broken Butterfly" The second page of which is out now both here, and on deviantART.
