Sweetie Belle's horn began glowing with an ever increasing light. At the same time she brought her hand together and turned her palms upward and cupped them as if she was holding something in them. The sound of her magic was drowned out by constant rumbling sound of the lava lake far below them. The space they were in was uncomfortably warm.
As this happened the small unadorned gold ring floated up off the ledge/trail the CMC were standing on and up into air until it floated just above eye level. The 3 fillies stared intently at the small object.
The CMC weren't certain how they had ended up here. One minute they had been on a school field trip to the Everfree Forest when they had been suddenly distracted by a strange glow coming from what turned out to be a small cave that Miss Cheerilee and the rest of their classmates had somehow missed.
The cave had gone back further than the fillies had expected and emptied out into this strange area. At the edge of the ledge the fillies encountered several unusual artificial items.
1. A cool looking short sword that had some blood splattered on its blade.
2. Some large leaves that were wrapped around what appeared to be big crackers/biscuits of unknown make. Although upon sampling them the girls did admit they were quite tasty.
3. At the very edge of the precipice the fillies found torn remnants of grey fabric that had caught on a rock.
4. Signs of scuffle and splotches of blood on nearby rocks.
5. The plain gold ring
After staring at it for a moment Applebloom muttered. “Wut is it?”
Scootaloo giggled. “Duh! It's a ring. Can't you tell?”
Sweetie who was still concentrating on keeping the ring levitated. “I think what Bloom is asking is what significance does it have with everything else we've found here.”
The pegasus filly shrugged and snatched the ring out of Sweetie's magical control with her right hand. Holding it between her thumb and forefinger she held it up for AB to see.
“It's gold ring. See?” Scootaloo then proceeded to nonchalantly flip the ring up in the air.
However the filly fumbled catching the ring and it went plunging over the edge and down into the lake of lava. Almost immediately there was a thunderous roar and jets of flame started shooting up from below. The CMC screamed and went dashing back the way they had come.

Location: 1950s England.
An elderly scholar in brown tweed jacket pauses and lifts his pen from the paper and surveys the page he's just written. Stares at it for a moment as he puffs on his long pipe; he suddenly frowns and then starts to cross it all out. Under his breath he mutters.
“This is rubbish! No reader would be daft enough to believe this ending.”
This is piece I started during my most recent Picarto[/url stream. The theme was magic, magicians, and magical items, and all things considered this is probably the best outcome you could have if you mixed the CMC and the One Ring.
