Amazing design I got from
Mokochii
Character design is theirs originally, adopted by me.
Crystal Lupus and her story belong to me,
Siber
For a while I've been wanting to redesign Crystal - she really didn't feel like she fit the more realistic world I am building with her original, more fantastical design.
So! Here she is with a new backstory to boot!
Full Name: Crystal Lupus
Gender: Female
Species: Gray Wolf
Height: 5 ft. 6 in. (170 cm)
Age: 22 years
Born to Roland and Elena Lupus on June 10, 2011, Crystal was a curious child.
Her father is a linguist and cultural historian who specializes in Caenan tribal dialects and oral traditions. Her mother is a university archivist who helps preserve ancient tribal texts.
Max Lupus, her older brother, is a field ecologist and researcher in environmental preservation, working with conservation efforts in the Caenan wilderness. Her brother is protective of Crystal, but often teases her for chasing myths instead of the “practical truths”. Despite that, they have a close and affectionate relationship.
With her family being academically driven but warm, her father’s linguistic studies and her mother’s archival work sparked her lifelong fascination with history and mythology.
In 2016, she was enrolled in a private school in the Nessian suburbs. Her family encouraged her to explore both science and storytelling. Through the years, her father told her stories of the Goddess Sagira and her ‘flames’. Max, already a teenager, often humored her with stories of wilderness expeditions and tribal legends, which nurtured her more adventurous side.
Starting in 2023, she began to regularly assist her mother with the University of Nessus’ archives. Here she learned to handle old manuscripts with care and oral records by memory. Her father’s colleagues began to become impressed with her for her early talent to translate old dialects.
Finally, in 2028, she enrolled at the University of Nessus, majoring in Anthropology and Cultural History. She chose this field rather than following Max into ecology, joking that “he studies what’s alive, but I want to study what’s remembered”. During her senior year in high school, she wrote an essay titled ‘The Fire That Binds: Cultural Depictions of the Soul’, which got her a small scholarship to help with her degree.
During her time working towards her degree, she became a research assistant to Professor Genin in the autumn of 2030. Genin specializes in post-Great Hunt mythology, and recognizes her unusual ability to connect fragmented sources. She begins to compile references to ‘Soulfire’ across multiple tribal oral accounts. During this same time, some parts of her fur began changing color. Fascinated by this phenomenon, she does her own research on this change. She learns that there are scattered references to a rare genetic predisposition for unusual pigmentation of her fur. Scattered parts of her fur that outlined her darker markings began slowly deepening into a violet color. She was ecstatic that she was a walking rarity, something that has been written about for decades.
In the spring of 2031, she published a short paper ‘Between Myth and Memory: The Lost Flames of Sagira’ based on the compiled data on Soulfire. This narrowed her focus on something listed in footnotes of footnotes: the ‘Bonded’. Another publication of hers, ‘Soulfire: Myth or Memory?’ proposes that Soulfire might have been a real, natural energy source. This paper draws skepticism but earns quiet fascination from niche historians. Her brother jokes that she’s “half scholar, half conspiracy theorist”.
In the autumn of 2033, she was returning to the University of Nessus after visiting a local archive for a transfer of a historical tome to the university. When her bag was snatched with this tome in it, a bystander took notice of the theft and sprung into action. Crystal quickly noticed that this bystander was something from myth, something she studied.
A jackal with a simple golden pelt, highlighted with a white flame wrapping around his right arm and a band of white fur around his upper left. She realized that she was looking at a living legend: a Bonded.
She had spent years chasing fragments of a story she wasn’t even sure was real.
Now, standing in the aftermath of it, she didn’t feel doubt—only quiet certainty.
The stories were true.
