Madame Sorcière - 03 - Rest Stop
Middle Age travel rations were designed to be easily portable, high in energy (calories), and could last a long time. These rations generally consisted of hard bread (or hardtack, ship's biscuits, amongst other names), some kind of dried meats (pork, fish, beef), dried fruits, hard cheese, and drink (usually wine or ale and, contrary to popular belief, water). Legumes like peas and beans were also available for use in pottages (stews). One can also forage for nuts, berries, fresh fruit, mushrooms, and greens to add to their food supply.
So while Circé won't be getting Domino's delivery any time soon, she'll get something to eat. Even if it's just hardtack and beef jerky. Although eating hardtack as it comes without preparation isn't advised, as that can lead to a broken tooth. Perhaps she should put that cauldron to use by foraging for some herbs and greens, swipe a carrot or two from Farmer Maggot's garden, and cooking them with the dried beef and hardtack (that's been pounded up into flour) for stew. Shame potatoes weren't available in 14th century Europe. Circé could boil 'em, mash 'em, or stick 'em in a stew.
I would also like to recommend a couple of YouTube channels that have helped me immensely in researching for this comic: Modern History TV and Medieval Madness. I highly recommend both for anyone who is a fan of medieval history.
Max Miller of Tasting History has done several videos about pizza so check those out, even though you're probably already a subscriber because that channel is freakin' awesome.
