Wild Cards: Jack and Ace, Part 25
“...We had a job,” The lioness said, “and they took it from us!” She lunged at Lightshow, claws and jaws open. “We all worked and made this place!” She missed Lightshow but her claws left marks on the table, “We spent years making this company what it is now!” She swung again and again, breaking windows and tearing at the walls, all just trying to land one hit on Lightshow. “Then they threw us away because they wanted someone else, they wanted people who worked for less so they could keep more money! They didn’t care about our effort! They didn’t care about what we did for them! NO ONE cared about us!” Her last swipe missed again, but got Lightshow to drop a smoke bomb. It billowed rapidly, with only a window broken open not being enough.
With the sense of danger, Lightshow moved over to the window with ease, but she could hear the other inside. Coughing and hacking on the sulfuric smoke, but also crying. Lightshow just had her head outside, while the other two were suffering inside. She thought about what that lioness said, and listened to her now sobbing. As it got quieter, Lightshow’s ears lowered. She took a deep breath and ducked back inside. She felt around and grabbed a body, then she dragged it toward one of the doors and pulled them out. Then she darted back inside and dragged out the lioness.
She laid them on the walkways, and looked down to Frostbite. They were silently staring at one another for a moment, then police sirens were heard outside, or were they always there?
“They’re gonna be inside soon!” Frostbite shouted, “How do we get out?”
“Up here, Quick!” Lightshow called back, and then ran for one of the windows. She unlocked it and they two scrambled through.
Barreling out still left them with a barbed fence between them and a get away. Lightshow was out of rockets, but there was still water spilling out everywhere from the faucet. Frostbite pushed water up by the fence, freezing some of it in the process. Like molding soft clay, he started to make a rock or sculpture that reached over the fence. Climbing the sculpture, over the fence, they made their getaway, the ice would melt on its own and cover their tracks. Police would rush into the facility, armed after the original support was overthrown, and all they’d find were rioters who were thawing in pain, and broken machinery.
