Hours passed until Watch woke up again. The rumbling of the train was still there, meaning they hadn’t stopped yet. The wolf got up with his bags and opened the hatch he climbed into the box the first time. Looking around, it was getting around evening, but Watch was more looking at the landmarks. It was more arid, and rocky, but not entirely a desert. He was going too far north, and started climbing down the side of the train car. Once lower to the moving ground, he jumped off the train and tucked himself right. He crash-landed into some bushes and rolled into a tree, head first. He rubbed the new bump on his head, and then got up and checked his things. He needed to go more south, but it wouldn’t help to stay in the wilderness. He looked back to the train tracks, knowing they were bound to stop in a town eventually, and he started walking again.
Hours passed, sun long had set since the wolf reached a town. Street lights and a few restaurant signs lit the streets, but not many windows had lights still on inside. There was a homeless shelter that was locked up for the night, and motels had closed signs on display. Watch didn’t bother knocking on any doors, he just looked for one of the bridges that traffic was still running over and under. Then he set the dufflebag as a pillow again, and took off his jacket to use as a blanket. There wasn’t much he could do about the passing cars, lights nor roaring engines; best he could do for the night was try and ignore them.
Waking up the next day, a few bugs had to be brushed out of his fur. He dusted off his clothes and grabbed his thing. His satchel was fine, the duffle bag was still closed, and the gun he kept at his waist was… something he had to hide. Donning his jacket again, he walked into town when the town was actually open again.
He felt his stomach, losing half his lunch and sleeping through dinner was a toll he could just sense. He could even be felt in his throat, so he stopped somewhere and got in line for a breakfast meal.
“Okay, Morning burritos with hashbrowns,” The cashier said, “Sorry, but the only drinks we can really do is like a bottle of water and some milk.”
“I’m guessing there’s an upcharge to that?” Watch said, half awake, “Just give me the food then.” While they prepared his food, Watch walked into the bathroom and turned on the sink. He woke up completely, when he had his head halfway toward the sink, the water was running fine, but was colored brown and looked foggy. He backed away completely and just looked at it, then he turned it off, and walked out of the bathroom. “Hey, You may wanna talk with management. There’s something wrong with the water.”
“Yeah, I’m sorry about that sir.” The collie said, “The water treatment plant hasn’t been able to purify very well, but they claim it should be safe to drink.”
“If that’s the case, the water should be crystal clear.”
“I really am sorry, sir.” The collie held up a to-go bag for him, “But there’s not really anything we can do about it. It’s why we had to also turn off our soda fountain, it keeps ruining the look of everyone’s drinks.”
“I see…” Watch said, then he took the food and left without a word.
