For me, even 3 and 4 were a bit distant, with the latter being it's own story that didn't follow too much the original story line. Think the other nail in the coffin for this series had to have been how well Monster Hinter took off. Not sure if Capcom ever plans to come back to the BoF series with how well MH is doing. Perhaps someday....we can only hope.
Ah yes, I remember now.
And maybe BoF 4 still did play in this same world, just not only centuries, but maybe millenias later, because the basic shape of the map and its continents is still recognizable, but most parts are covered in an ocean of mud, maybe after the polar regions had melted or something like that.
That could even explain, why the cultures took a different way of evolution.
But that is only my suggestion here.^^;

That is the only negative aspect of this game. I admit that.
As for anthros mostly featured in cartoons: This is in my oppinion only partly true, there are striking examples, that lean more towards mature and even adult topics: For example allmost every werewolf horror movie is more or less about an anthropomorphic character connected with violence.
Blacksad works with mature topics and does not shy away to show violence and blood.
Wereworld on Netflix is also rathur mature, although they show that in indirect ways.
Kulipari Frog army or the Redwall cartoon are also examples that are cartoony, but still more or less into mature topics.

Fair for all of those things listed, mostly meant that from purely aesthetic points that anthros tend to work better and feel alot more attractive to look at! Good example is Jon Talbain from Darkstalkers or Vampire Hunter/Savior! It's a weirdly dark game but there is also a good lump of comedy in the games! It's very goofy and I can link you an example if you'd like!
