I haven’t done any pre-colonial pics for a while, but I’m slowly getting back to it.
Full context: I was watching a video about Tejon Pass (just south of Bakersfield when I got inspired by the name “Tejon” to make a new character (Tejon is Spanish for badger) for a possible new friend for Michael to meet. Then, I read Raised by Indians, memoir of Thomas Jefferson Mayfield who as a young boy was raised as an adopted member of the Choinumni (Choinumne) branch of the Yokuts tribe. More specifically, the part about how they dress themselves. While the loincloth is pretty close, I found the following quotes about the hair was wore.
Quote 1: Both men and women wore their hair long. I do not believe that was customary for them to braid their hair in the days before they came into contact with the white people. I never saw one of the real old Indians with braided hair.
Quote 2: The women cut their hair off in front in bangs, but the men left their hair long across the front. Both men and women sometimes smeared their hair with bear oil, which made it shine.
While the account is mainly about the Choinumni branch, I will say it’s good enough since it’s an eyewitness account (I would still like to find more additional reading material just to be safe). With that said, it doesn’t mention the head band or ties I’ve used on Michael. Because of this, I plan on not including those unless I find information that proves they were used. I’m leaving the old pics up since I rather show that nobody’s perfect in their research journey. It can happen with anyone.
As for this badger fella, I have two options; make him a new friend for Michael or use him for period pics or comics. I did plan on drawing both he and Michael together, but that’s for another time. Please comment!!!!!Art©KCFoxStudiosDo not copy or reproduce!!!!!
