Seated Bear (Sophia) was created by Canadian sculptor Dean Drever. I don't recall who called my attention to this amazing work, but I knew instantly that I would have to see it in person if I ever made it back to Toronto. She can be found in Big Bear Park at Don Mills and Eglinton. It's impossible to judge scale from this photo, but Sophia is gigantic. Standing at 5 feet 10 inches right next to her granite pedestal, I could not reach high enough to touch her toes.
According to the nearby placard:
Bears are prodigiously fair-minded animals considering their place in the food chain. They are regarded as supreme beings having no natural predators.
Bears exhibit a kind of absolute power but they wield it only when necessary.
For this reason, they are often portrayed as fearsome animals who, at the same time, evoke warm, cuddly maternal protection. Their allure is pure strength tempered with unconditional love.
