I'm gonna start working on a little storyline that follows along with some living machines (or aerosaurs I haven't decided) who get sent to like a small private boneyard when they're retired, not air-worthy or just mangled. AKA like a retirement home for these guys BUTTT, one of my fav dilemmas in my stories is how people struggle to see them as living beings and not just machines. So there's actual morals and ethics that need to be considered, SO!! That makes scrapping/gutting/recycling parts from an airframe/vehicle kinda disturbing, especially if the being itself doesn't want that.
And almost all of the "residents" are like vets, caked in dust, their paint and markings are all faded and most of them are ashamed/humiliated at being sent to basically rot away.
This old guy is Badger, the vaguely F-4E Phantom II -> he's grumpy, has a short temper and isn't much of a talker. In this scenario, Felix is also technically older, outdated and retired, but that doesn't stop him from bugging the HELL out of Badger. Snapping, the cold-shoulder, scathing remarks - they don't work on Felix. If we're also being lore accurate to the Tomcat's history, he would technically be on the chopping block, and doesn't want to admit that he's terrified of being scrapped. Badger is his escape, and a loooong way down the road Badger begins to tolerate (and you'd catch him dead before he admitted it) and appreciate his company.
When you're old, outdated and practically worthless (or too expensive/advanced to get into the wrong hands) to your own government, there's not much you can do but stick together.
A bit of a dreary AU, but I want to work with a bit more angst :D! If y'all have any ideas or characters LMK!! I'm so open to working with others on this, I think it would be super cool.

Dam, you could see your reflection in those beans lmao
On a serious note, adorable characterization in depressing-ass settings? Few things I love more than interections that, at first glance, clash with the situation but actually make perfect sense (like this and these days, we all cope down here)

I love adding unnecessary shine on things LMAOO-
And absolutely agreed! I like to think in this AU Felix comes in a bit late, still reeling from being (in a sense) hunted by his own country. He's still got his spark and that need to prove himself to others, but the humans look the other way- the next best? ... Your local battered vet, Badger. I love the idea of characters who hide their own fear/insecurities with masks, I think it'll make a nice strong scene later on when that mask slips a little and Badger realizes Felix isn't just some blissfully ignorant idiot.

Ya remember that small list of "things I love more than..."?
Characters who always act in a very specific, characteristic way only to suddenly change in some very specific situation bc of their underlying psychology or a heavily-hinted-at-past, is a sure-fire way to make me love a character (worse is that one of my autistic stims is psychoanalyzing people 😅)
