Drawing my autistic characters: Dorian
I’m drawing all of my autistic characters for autism awareness month! I started with the very first one I ever designed: Dorian.
He’s gone through a lot of changes as I’ve designed him, but where he’s at now, is where I’m happy with him :)
Dorian is a fully non verbal, high support needs (lvl 3) red fox. He’s 16 years old, and uses an AAC device (or alternative augmentation device) to communicate with his friends or other animals. He’s known for being a bit mischievous, a tad facetious, and very silly. He loves little toy cars, like hot wheels, and loves bugs and insects, his favorite are stick bugs, then butterflies.
Often, unfortunately, characters like Dorian in media aren’t often treated as their own characters, but rather like plot devices for their families of friends. Dorian’s story is from HIS point of view, and focuses on HIM. He’s respected by his friends, and they always do their best to support him and accommodate his needs (such as not touching him without asking, or using smaller sentences he can understand). Not once is he treated as a burden, not once is he talked over, and not once is he treated like he needs pity or sympathy. He’s just existing how he is, and that’s great.
He’s a character close and dear to my heart, and I hope he’s a good representation of not just autism, but especially of those with higher support needs, who unfortunately are often left out of things.
Fun fact: he’s French/spanish!
