Cats are really good for that. You're not doing anything and want to pay attention to them? They ignore you or barely tolerate your presence. You're doing something really important that involves concentration? They're all "I love you! I missed you even though I just saw you five seconds ago! PAY ATTENTION TO MEEEE!"
An aside here- In the early 1950s, no record company wanted to release an album of Lehrer’s songs. Too controversial, too bad taste. So Lehrer vanity pressed an album of his music, Songs By Tom Lehrer, and got it on the market. It was such a success that he released a second album, More Songs By Tom Lehrer. The second album had reviews of the first printed on the back of the sleeve. The kindest one was from The London Daily Telegraph. It said, “Plays piano acceptably."
