o.o darn rickety rope bridges, always breaking apart when something dark and forboding is chasing you.

Why is it these rope bridges in forests are NEVER sturdy or well maintained? Was there like a legendary bridge builder 70 years ago that went around the world and built all of them?

I'd imagine they're supposed to be relics of when there was a village nearby or something of that nature that needed the bridge-- but villages can die out or be abandoned, so out in the wilds, it's not unheard of to find a bridge that, while it hasn't seen maintenance for decades or even centuries, may still be able to hold itself up out of the sheer quality of the original construction. It's also not too rare to find a bridge that has rotted until it broke apart on its own, but those are much less useful :p So we don't see many stories about people trying to cross them.
