I recently bought a latching cable thinger for my 35mm SLR and finally decided to try some night photography on the 4th. All I had on-hand was some ISO200 film but things turned out pretty cool (after doing some color correction). I wasn't really doing much planning, just point the camera where people were setting stuff off in the valley and then hold the shutter open for a while and see what happened. I thought about using a polarizer to try and maybe cut down on some of the haze but didn't use it since I'd never tried anything like this before.

Putting the polarizer on would have cut out too much light. You did fantastic, and your method is exactly what you're supposed to do to get these kind of results.
Night photography, especially firework photography, is always a hit-or-miss affair, and requires a lot of experimentation to begin to get things in the right ballpark. You're certainly doing better than I am though. Great shot!
(As an aside, I do like your composition overall. The firework exploded in just the right place.)
