Don Bluth was of the oppinion, that children should be taken serious as an audience and that they eventually would be able to handle darker toned stories with tragic elements. He said, if they are confronted with a "still tuned down" but nontheless visible trauma, they of course will be hurt, but then they can think about it and then they are not so unprepared, when tragedy will strike. That is, what makes the Don Bluth animated movies stand out. Their more mature, and often melancholic style.
As for the following movies, I lost the thread after movie 4, for it was a cute animated story, but they lack the flair of the original.

I think the point was to depart from the first film. They made it to the lush land that all of the herbivores wanted to migrate to. There is not as much need to fulfill a darker tone if the story where it was necessary had already ended. While they could continue it, the place is a sanctuary, and with relatively no real point to leaving it logically. So it does make sense for the children to leave into incredibly dangerous territory.
I forgot what film 4 was, but...I think it was the one about the strange volcanic rock? .v.
