Noverran Hero-Class Battlecruiser
Warning: Spoilers for "War for the Frontier" follow. If you do not wish to have certain aspects spoiled, do not read the ships description.
That everyone? Alright.
The "Hero-Class" Battlecruisers are fleet of six Battlecruisers built for the Royal Noverran Navy, and their names are pulled from Battlefield Heroes... except for one... Richard A. Galston.
He wasn't much. He was just a Sergeant. A dancer at a club named "The Swinging Banana", and had a bit of a mouth.
But to one... he was her reason for being.
He is the father of Jade Elinette, and though she barely got to know him... he loved her deeply.
But fate would be cruel to them both... when on June 24th, 2057... a snipers bullet took him from her, and her mother... Manelle Elinette. A woman who he saw as something more than just an officer. He saw a queen.
He wrote a number letters to various members of Parliament, and eventually, Prime Minister Kayla Bursin asked Manelle if she'd accept the nomination as Queen.
She Accepted.
During her time as "Queen Apparent, and after the war, the Hero-class was laid down, originally as a 12in armed battlecruiser. However, after post-war scavenging of Altaran Records revealed a proposed warship that might have been armored against 14in guns or equivalent, the decision was made to quietly upgrade from the 12in Mk1 guns to the 16in Mk2s.
The Richard A Galston, lead ship of the class, was laid down in November of 2058, completed in June 2061, and began sea trials while Manelle was on her honeymoon period after coronation.
During her Sea Trials, she was able to demonstrate a fire rate with her main guns of up to 10 shots a minute, and perform a successful "Multiple Round, Simultaneous Impact" or "MRSI" mission, where four rounds can be put into the air at various angles with 5th landing at the same time as the 1st... per gun.
But then came her speed test.
During this test, she was expected to hit 32kts... but pushed past that.... to 37. When the reactors were pushed to "Flank power", they watched the speed climb to 45kts before backing off.
Now, before anyone gets a bur, keep in mind that that speed is only possible in a straight line. Most captains push to flank speed when they need every ounce of power from the engines, especially when maneuvering. Odds of her seeing that kind of speed in combat is extremely low. She also achieves this speed because her reactors were designed for the Sentinel-Class Aircraft Carrier, which has almost a full 20,000 tons on the Hero, and since her turbines also came from the same source, it's not hard to see how such a ship can get such a pace.
The first taste of combat for the class came in early October 2065, when a country known as the "Eastern Mediterranean Sultanate" effectively declared war on Noverra. The Sultanate had been harassing shipping in the Med for about six months, and an envoy was dispatched by C-130 to deliver an ultimatum. Either end the raids, or face punishment.
The Sultan believed that Queen Manelle would do nothing, and took the C-130J as a prize, and the envoy as prisoners... and then ordered the sinking of any Noverran flagged ship in the Med. Within hours of that order, one was found and sunk... a civilian owned Liberator named the RMS Fellowship. The crew managed to abandon ship, but were taken prisoner by the Sultanate, and placed in the same Cell Block as the Envoy.
Manelle, through Tim, ordered that the issue be dealt with, and Operation Sand Wave was launched the moment the 1st Carrier Strike Group entered the Med, and began locating and sinking EMS ships.
The Eternal Vigilance and her air group would sink over fifty gun and missile boats in the med, as well as one of the Sultanate Navy's Destroyers.
Galston then got her chance when she was ambushed by the other Destroyer near Malta, and though the Destroyer got a number of torpedoes away, Galston avoided them, and then returned fire with her main battery. After a few failed ripple blasts, the TAO called the broadside... at 14nmi, all 9 guns were brought to bear... 8 HE shells hit the Destroyer, and it simply ceased to exist.
The following day, with the Galston picking apart shore installations, and the Vigilance pounding away at deeper inland targets, the 1st MEU aboard RNN Lexington landed, and began to immpediately push inland.
After three days of fighting, a team of SEALs infiltrated the Sultans palace, and forced him to sign a cease fire while part of the team had a "Cultural Exchange" with his security detail.
After the armistice, Tim reported back to Manelle, and she asked how the operation, now known as the Third Barbary War, could be over so fast.
Tim simply told her "The SEALs gave the Sultan an officer he couldn't refuse... either his brains or his signature would be on that paper."
Further negotiations ultimately concluded the conflict, and ended the threat to shipping in the area.
