I commissioned the wonderful
CadmiumTea for this one. Thanks so much, Cadmium!

Many wild birds have very different appearances when they're young. Even after the hatchling phase with all the pin feathers and such, many species look markedly different in their adolescence. Appropriately enough, all this can also be true for our anthro friends!
Young California gulls have mostly brown feathers with some white streaks patterning through, black beaks, and pink feet. It can take several cycles of molting as they grow up for their adult plumage and colors to come in. This all happens to be true for anthro California gulls, too, and Gale has the school photos to prove it! Let's take a look back in time to her younger days.
This photo was taken way back in Gale's secondary school days in Scotland! The yearbook team was going around snapping shots of the semester's students and activities, and this one of Gale happened to make it into the final publication. At this point in her life, Gale is just a student with dreams of being a writer. It'll be another year until she reads Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which will flip a switch in her head. For now, it's all just vague ideas of being some kind of author or maybe a reporter.
In this little snapshot in time, we can see that Gale, like most teens, had one foot in childhood and one in adult life. Her scales had already turned yellow, which she would proudly point out make her obviously no longer a kid, but her beak was still the spot-less black of youth and she was still several years and a couple of molts away from her adult plumage. She had just been prescribed glasses that year, and while she insisted that she didn't really need them, they did free her from having to sit in the front row of every class.
The infinite possibility of the future stretches out before her. With the bright eyes of youth, Gale can hardly wait to get out there and seize the reins of life. She has no idea of the incredible journey before her—full of adventure, long nights, hard work, world travel, defeat, triumph, and love—but she's eager to get out there and find out. She wants to rush things along and get busy living as much as any teen does, but there will be time enough for all of that later. For now, she has schoolwork to see to.
