Isaac checked his gear a few times, again, nothing was loose. He reached the apartment, opened the door, and tried to stay quiet while passing. Then he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to see an oven mitt and then an elderly rabbit, fur white as snow but eyes red like a warm hearth. A large pair of ears flop and drape over her shoulders, and stop by her sweater.
“Don’t think you can just get by either of us, Isaac.” Aunty said, “I know you got your clothes soiled again, but you don’t have to hide it.”
“Oh, Yeah, sorry.” Isaac said, “It was just another one of those days.”
“You know I’d hug you if I could,” She smiled, “Your uncle and I know how hard this city is, if something happened, it’s okay to talk about it. We’re just happy you weren’t hurt.”
“Yeah,” Isaac said, “I just wish I could do something more about it.” He looked at his hand.
“You will, but you need to wait.” Aunty said, “Stay in school, get smarter, and you’ll figure out all these problems.”
“And people will be happy because of it.”
The statement got his aunt to chuckle, “Of course, dear. Why don’t you get cleaned up, I chilled your fruit salad for you, and the meat should be cold enough for you now.”
“Thank you, Aunt Izzy.” Isaac smiled through his mask, then he walked to his bedroom. He opened the seal then walked inside, then resealed to keep the cold air in. doffing his gear and throwing on clothes took a longer time than normal. He kept thinking about what Elisa said, and what the riot was about.
Across town, Elisa walked past several homes until she was at hers. Dingy blue paint chipping away, and a door with claw marks near the lower half. She didn’t bother with the door knob, just pushing on the wood told her the place was locked. She was home late, so she was locked out. Instead, she climbed a tree and onto the roof of the house, the windows on the second floor weren’t locked, so she just climbed inside. She looked around, as this wasn’t her room, and then sneaked across the floor to the hallway.
“Eli?” A soft groan was heard, “Eli?”
Elisa looked back and saw a little deer peaking his head out of bed, “Hey Jimmy.”
“Are you home?” Jimmy rubbed his eyes, “They said you ran away.”
“They always say that.” Elisa whispered as she walked over to him, “I’m pretty hard to get rid of.”
“They’re going to get mad when they find you in the morning.”
“I know, they always do.” Elisa rubbed the kid’s head, “But I’m still around.” She grumbled, “Because they need their every tax deduction.”
“Tacks?”
“Don’t worry kiddo.” The cat kissed his head, “I’ll see you later.” Then the cat got up, and walked out. Going from the children’s room to the teenage room, where she would just walk past everyone who was sleeping or on their phone. She laid down and forced the covers over her head, just thinking about what happened that day and what was coming tomorrow.
