-Reminds me of a story a late friend of mine once told me. He was a retired LAPD detective, and the story- Back in the mid-60s, the Deluxe-Redding company marketed a line of big gaudy toy guns under the Defender Dan / Johnny Seven / Johnny Tar-heel names. You bought them in supermarkets instead of department stores. At first glance, these guns looked like real military weapons though they weren’t, and there was an incident on the Hollywood Freeway where a family was driving along in their station wagon with all the windows rolled down. Their 9 year old son was in the back seat with one of those guns, pointing it out the window at passing cars, and making machine gun sounds with his tongue between his lips, Splut-splut-splut. A hipster driving a fancy sports car speeding past the station wagon saw that toy gun pointed at him, thought it was the real thing, freaked out, swerved into the opposite lane and caused a six car pile-up. Fortunately, nobody was
killed. Those toy guns went off the local super market shelfs not long afterwards.
