Through out history there was rumours of people going missing and small beasts attacking unprovoked , it was always just that. for not many saw them and they were rare, but as humanity began industrialising and expanding out. reports of similar phenomena became more common, it was a paranormal virus that slowly replaced human cells, usually transmitted through a “venom” produced by the beasts, this kept the infections low as the beasts were uncommon, fearful of daylight and due extensive extermination efforts by countries if numbers became too high. But as Europe erupted into war, immune systems were weakened by the Spanish flu, injury and stress. And infections became more common, such as the case with Lukáš černý (pictured here) who was drafted for the Austro-Hungarian empire, beasts like him were rare as they would try to spread the infection above all else, but those with strong enough willpower or a lack of venom glands could be allowed to exist in society, Usually with a great deal of prejudice. Beasts that were disillusioned with current society, often fled into the wilderness to form their own communities, especially those that had been rejected by new countries after the empires dissolved who had nowhere to be.
