So I mentioned I was working on something bigger back when i was still on Tybee. This is it. (Hit F5 for original size)
Decided it was time to try my hand at an orbital battle scene again. Still not as chaotic and involved as I'd like it to be, but it was very entertaining to work on this and watch it grow as I go.
Battle shows several concepts I've been tossing about int he back of my head.
- What you see on the right side is a re-design of the Si'itian power armor, which I'll be presenting eventually when I get the ref for it done.
- Behind them is a light si'itian carrier craft. What you see on the nose there is the barrel of the main gun, a particle lance.
- The thingy it's shooting up is an Orian scouting ship, taking several salvos from a few of the carriers batteries
- Zooming by below that shoot-out are several Si'itian heavy fighters. Don't have a name for them yet, might come...
- An Orian destroyer is fighting it's way out of the planets gravity well in the background
- The one next to it was just exposed to the devastating effect of the afoermentioned particle lance
- At the far end of the battle you see a Si'itian destroyer bleeding off fused nano-armor and laying down a barrage in direction of the screen
- Dominating the bottom left corner is a close up of an Orian destroyers hull, with a battle being fought out at the aft airlock and Orian reinforcements being brought in via dropship.
As I said, it's still not as chaotic and flashy as I'd like it to be, but it was a nice challenge and a good opportunity to see where I'm at.
More art to come up, including a little something about our very favorite little fennec girl ^^

It's difficult to say exactly what I like about this, as any specifics just blend into each other. The entire thing is just amazing visually and mentally. I cannot stress enough how much I simply adore pictures which tell a greater story. Thank you for sharing this with the rest of us. :}
I keep watching this picture and listen to this repeatedly <3

Actually I've had this discussion before, including the pros and cons of having space capable fighter craft etc. - came down to the conclusion that all concepts of space battle, including skirmish broadsiding and having fighter craft/point defense weaponry all makes sense in some way or another. If you want to I can lay out the explaination for you in a note, or even here at another time, but we had a lot of fun with the subject last time around X3
Thanks anyhow, I'm glad you enjoy the picture :3

I too am rather curious of your explanation. Every realistic prediction of what space combat would be like, that I have heard, involves vessels sitting light-minutes away from one another, firing directed energy weapons or very high-speed projectiles, and immediately repositioning, ala modern snipers and submarines.
Chaotic or not, this piece of work is absolutely FUCKING amazing. Each race has its own similar-but-unique design aesthetic and I really like that. THe weapon effects--in particular, the effects they have on each ship-- are just stunningly believable. Absolutely one of my favorite pictures ever.
The movie was nice, tough as for I'm more a fan of the original, and its refits, I found the new enterprise ugly. Mostly for the inverted warpnackle pylons. What I really wanted to see his how the fleet was wiped out by the narada at the Vulcan before our late heroes arrive. Maybe thats why I love your work so much. :3
Looks fantastic! Though, being in those smaller fighter craft must suck.
Also, the title reminded me of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dV2Gtqo0UU - When the Russian gives the command to clear the skies.

Wow, wow and WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWW
You are throwing me many many years back when the net was not here and you were discovering, after hours of walking randomely, a library that was selling some foreign (let's even say, "alien") artbook with some fantastic sci-fi artist illustrations....... That was something else than having everything at reach from a couple of clicks like today. But with your art I'm ALWAYS feeling this way. I swear you are at the same level than Manchu, Peter Elson and Chris Foss to me

Depends the way you manage it, all those artists I mentionned are known for themselves, I don't even know for which company (and even if they ever did XD ) they worked!! Manchu for example, our french designer, always has been independant. It's a LOT of work to be able to earn your life this way, but if you manage to get recognized, people know your name better than the ones you worked for. It's quite an achievement.
Oh, and once again, I really put you among them - it's at least MY own list and taste.......

Well, that used to be the case. Today you don't have single people so much as you have groups of people, or design companies. The individual designer/artist used to be a lot higher regarded back in the day X3 The guys you mentioned seem to have an older flair to them, like 60's 70's, which is great stuff to look at 8D
Thanks though, I'm glad you hold me in such high regards ^^

Wow, iPoke... I really don't know what to say regarding this pic. I mean, I really don't exaggerate when I say that the sheer amount of linework, coloring, and shading detail in this enormously sized, sci-fi battle themed work of art really speaks to your great level of skill, talent, and professionalism as an artist. I'm serious, there's so many aspects and details that stand out to me, including but not limited to:
- the new cool and badass-looking redesign of the power suits of the Si'itian race. I really like how the sharp and carefully inked linework details in the armored plates, weapon/pocket compartments on the legs and back of the waist, and even spaces made to fit their tails and ears give the suits that sci-fi military-grade look about them
- the large, aesthetic battle ship designs of both the Si'itians and Orians. You did a great job in drawing and coloring them to have that vast and massive feel to them, especially in comparison to the smaller-sized ships in flight in the background. My personal favorites are the light Si'itian carrier craft in the top-right corner and the Orian destroyer craft in the bottom-left corner. That said, the smaller ships in the background looked just as awesome as well. :) I don't know why, but the battle scene with them in action kind of reminds me of the Mass Effect game series (SO looking forward to when ME3 comes out soon, btw).
- the lighting effects of the lasers fired from the ships. I like how the lasers have that slight glow effect around as they're fired, but more than that, the direction of travel of the lasers fired from the ships onto other ships in the distance really gives them that extra amount of depth and scale in my opinion.
- the realistically-detailed explosion effects from the ships being damaged/destroyed. The attention to detail on the damage effects on the ships from said explosions (especially the ship in the bottom-middle corner) looked especially nice as well.
Great job on the new orbital battle scene pic! :D It's easy to see that you spent a lot of time and effort into it, and it's really paid off! I'm very much looking forward to seeing what new art you'll show in the near future. :)

Actually there was very little linework going on in this picture. I did small light wires to know where to place things, but everything else was just painted right in :3
I'm glad you enjoy the piece. I really hope your impression of my professionalism and talent will be enough to get me a job in the business later, since I would love to be doing, both design and illustration for games and entertainment later in life :3
- I was actually worried about making people understand just how large these ships are. All things considered, my most difficult task would probably be making people understand how huge the largest Si'itian ship is, but that's a matter of patience and possible a picture in the future XD
- I'm really looking forward to ME3 myself, even though I haven't finished playing through ME2 yet, since I only just bougth it on offer X3
- Glad you enjoy the glowies, you know how much I emphasize them X3
We'll see what I get to produce in the future. Right now I'm just working on background stuff, both for characters and species. Eventually I should get down to working on 'commissions' too, but my motivation is just slacking off big time at the moment 9.9
Ah well, thanks a lot anyhow =^-^=

This one is filled with so much space-battley awesome that it doesn't fit my screen. Heck, I think I wouldn't fit two of my screens!
I think it's chaotic enough as it is. There's lots of space in space, so spreading out the action a little bit helps one concentrate on the details and it emphasizes the scale of the vessels depicted.

They tried that with themselves, ended in a massive war that left a number of planets behind as wastelands and their species crippled until they slowly managed to piece themselves back together. Since then they've maintained a policy of strong isolationism.
Besides, they are certainly one of the most technologically advanced species in our Galaxy, but there's always a bigger fish and there's at least one species out there who would put their hands in if they ever did attempt to put up a galactic empire, even if they do seem like they care little for the 'young ones' of the milky way.

Fantastic work, man. You have a flair for this stuff, and this one spills epic everywhere. Also, ridiculous res for the win. Totally desktop worthy.
In the event that you ever open your commission status, I have a few things that I would love to see you do, being that it's sci-fi stuff. I'm a huge fan of your artwork in general, but especially with weapons and armor.

Yeah, happens to me all the time, but you can't help it :< in the end, there's so much media and material out there someone will always claim that he is reminded of something else by original designs of ones own. I'm just convinced enough by my work not to bother with it X3 if there is inspiration from other media I give credit where credit is due
Magnifficent battle action. Too bad its taking its action in space so we cant hear all the BAYsplosions! xD
There is so much win here that I will just sum it up short. Great ammount of work, great detail, great lighning on both lasers, fires and explosions. Also you can really feel the size of the ships, especialy the one in top right corner.
Sorry for the late comment, but I am waaaaaaaaaaay behind in those xD
