I asked you what artists are most tired of — and here’s what you said;
After going through tons of comments, I picked out the most common opinions and illustrated them. Being an artist in today’s world really isn’t easy…
Tell me, what resonated with you the most?

I'm not really an artist as much as I would like to be, but "Did you generate this?" really resonated with me from the perspective of someone who really enjoys 'consuming' art. I hate that if I see art in the wild, I often have to go "Is this AI" or have a snap judgment of "This looks like AI". It frustrates me that outside of curated spaces with people I know I have to spend more time determining if it's AI than enjoying the hours of work someone put into a piece
I'm sick of all of these. I just have to come to terms with the fact I'll just be that one random username that pops up randomly, mediocre art, no people skills, "why should I pay you for art when I can feed your gallery into an ai algorithm and get it instantly for free", someone asking if I could make them a character based off of mine that I was already hesitant to share because they're deeply personal creations and not just mass-produced like the people who make a new character every other week (this is still valid, but not me). I made one art series based on a video game, and it got me the most attention I've ever had, but the ones with actual lore about my character got so much less attention, so the thing I'm most passionate about and means the most to me is just background rubbish to people.
Ever since ai started shitting all over artists, I've been even more hesitant to even bother. Not just for being accused of it (I've never used it once and never will), but to have my stuff stolen more than it might've already been. I'm even more hesitant to share my personal projects and characters only to have people compare and make jokes about them.
It all sucks. I just draw for myself and try not to care what others think, but that's still hard. (sorry for the long rambling)

As someone who struggled with the exact same thing but for fanfiction writing, what I discovered is simple, though still a bit demoralizing in a way.
Crossovers (or fan art for artists) are going to inherently have a higher draw for readers than original characters. Unless your premise, cover art, etc. are all just on another level, making a crossover/fan art is automatically going to generate more interaction because people already like/know what you're writing/drawing, and are thus far more likely to give it a chance. I caught myself doing the same thing when reading in going, "Well, I don't know what this other fandom is for this crossover, but the premise sounds really interesting so I'll give it a try."
Original work is just, unfortunately, much harder. It's like getting your book published, but you have little marketing or anything and you're just praying that the cover art and the summary you wrote for the back of the book or the inside cover is enough to entice people to give it a chance, because REALLY it's GOOD, you KNOW it is, but... Well, we're at the mercy of the audience to give us said chance.
(I apologize if I rambled too much unsolicited. Just thought I could try to offer some insight as to why others acted that way with your art series based on the video game compared to your original world, story, etc. The only advice I can really give is just keep plugging at it, and hope that the people who DO read/watch the original stuff tell their friends that this series is really good, you should go take a look, etc. Don't get too discouraged and just keep moving forward.)

It's sad how true and seemingly contradictory these often are. Like, you're tired of seeing AI and of people trying to pass themselves off as artists by using AI, and yet also tired of people spending the time to judge whether it's AI (well, specifically tired of them getting it wrong).
Or the facts of life of, being annoyed at how high effort content gets no attention and low effort memes go viral. Or how you have to actually do a ton of things that isn't making art in order to continue making art as a career. Or, the simple fact that, we as connection making machines will notice similarities between art styles or between someone's art and a piece of content, and that it makes you feel like you weren't original and devalues your work.
(Yes I'm going to repeat all of the points apparently lmao)
All of this sucks. I'm not even coming at it as an artist myself, but as someone who grew up planning to do one thing and lived for my first 25 years expecting to do that one thing and doing that one thing, and now finally having to accept that this needs to change and the skill I enjoy is not actually the one that matters and that the world appears less and less rosy with each passing week...
I feel for everyone out there. Here's hoping we can all find solace, hope, and new perspective in our own ways, through our own comforts and experiences. This stuff is hard as fricc man.

Thank you 👏 Thank you 👏 THANK YOU 👏😭
Genuinely perfectly captured and expressed so much of the struggle and pressure I (and no doubt countless other creatives) are going through. 😢 It's incredibly validating to know we're not alone, you know?
Also, awesome work all around on this 💚

This is such a mood, can't enjoy any content anymore with out that Cheeto shit sullying it, I see a lot of ignorance regarding the comparisons and god it's so frustrating to explain without ppl just jumping to the "your insecure" or " that's a compliment" ugh 😩
I don't get it much but I've seen it thrown nilly willy.

It's funny that you post this, I was literally just discussing with my mother earlier how lately when it comes to art I've just been feeling completely demotivated. It's hard to get excited about the activity when you're surrounded by a sea of slop, an oversaturated market, and now this AI garbage. I'd have to become a streamer just to prove I drew the damn piece and that just sounds exhausting. I struggle enough with self confidence in my art so it's even more difficult when you post a piece you are so proud of just to receive crickets as a response. People tell me just to draw for me but that doesn't make it any less demoralizing at times given the previously mentioned.
In any case, thank you for making this piece. It's comforting to know I'm not the only one struggling with all of these things...

Hmm, I appreciate this. I recently went and visited DeviantArt for the first time in maybe 4 years, and it's literally full of low-effort AI weirdness. I miss the days when my DeviantArt feed was full of awesome hand-made stuff. Now, you gotta go digging to find stuff that's been made by someone with a heartbeat.
The AI-generated slop doesn't seem to be quite as prevalent here on FA, thankfully. One of the many reasons I've visited FA for so long.

All of the above, but especially "Did you generate this?". I don't stream my writing, and I don't always keep copies of old drafts since I write as a pantser (I don't do much plotting or planning). Despite my dislike of AI, a recent big news story put the fear of AI witch hunts deep enough in my burnt out brain that I just haven't been able to motivate myself to write, even for myself.
While I'm relieved I'm not nearly as alone as I thought, I'm sorry so many creators also having to deal with the demotivating chaos from others.

Goes for us writers too. In different ways, but I feel you. Especially that last one. It's not just my own work. I see good books by good authors, but they get even less traction than I do, and that's a pretty low bar. It's clearly not because the work is bad. It's not. They wrote good books! But for some reason, they never get the attention they deserve.
Being everything at the same time and also trying to somehow attract the attention of others.. but I'm relatively glad that I moved away from the dream idea of "making a living from drawing" and now I'm trying to "live like an adult at an adult job" :")
Although I still draw as a hobby (creating characters who grew up with me and writing stories with them) + from time to time I take comms, even to buy myself some goodies
There's so much generated content that it's disgusting and even scary... Using AI as a tool for information retrieval to save time doesn't seem so bad, but for image generation? No.
Some may say that people reacted to photography in the past, but photography in no way interferes with freehand art. I can't even imagine AI images still being considered art in the future... although it's sad to think about it
Thank you very much for this wonderful illustration and for raising this topic!

It would be so hilarious if anyone would accuse you of that. You created amazing art back when the fill tool spilled its color across the entire canvas through a 1px wide opening in the outline.
Of course, that is no help to new artists. I feel honestly sorry for them, having to proof themselves in a time of suspicions.

So, I'm admining a small art community, and we have a rule there that if you're sharing art, you have to link the source. Not just random source - has to be artist's profile or their submission, specifically. Not a random repost, not artist's link in a repost, not no-source-linking, not just namedropping. Violating the rule carries no consequences, other than the post getting deleted and being told to link the source.
Most of the people that come around have no issue with this... except a few units that didn't read the rules and then had to make a point to express their rage over it (???). One particular situation sticks out in my memory: it was a guy that was claiming he bought full copyright, so he isn't going to link the artist because fuck the artist and fuck our rules as they're not democratic! ...Which is batshit insane to me. One of the fastests bans ever x)
