Pirate captain Fafnir and his crew had raided so many hostile ships and gathered loot, that they could not spend it in their life-times. So they decided to share their fortune, but not for free and not to all and anyone. They "test" possible candidates to see, if they are worthy to obtain a treasure.

Here two young boys were the fortunate ones. One of them overheard Fafnir in a tavern recititing fragments of poetry in a drunken state and they realize, that he is talking about a hidden treasure. They came up with enough courage to ask the dragon pirate for more information, but he replied, that they need to become stronger, so that they could force him to reveal the whereabouts of his treasure.
So they came up with the plan to capture the pirate, who appeared to be drunk beyond all reasoning. They tie him up and command him to show them the spot, where the treasure would be hidden. But Fafnir only recitite some more strange verses. After a while, the two lads realize, that the verses are hints to the location and soon, they really could dig up the chest filled with riches, they never had seen before.
They placed a knife close to where Fafnir was sitting bound and leashed, so that he could free himself eventually and went off with their treasure.
Fafnir indeed does free himself and his pirates, who had followed the treasure-hunters in reasonable distance, to make sure, that their captain is save, see the boys leaving with their treasure, knowing that the right ones have received a reward.
