I was workign in the yard and the idea of "Red" Pandas came to mind. Scotty Arsenault and Mondegreen style pandas feature. Just a cute little doodle in pencil and watercolor

there's not really a difference, they're both separate species. As far as I know, giant pandas are a type of bear and red pandas are a unique species that hasn't evolved in about 7 million years...

Is that just Western sloppiness, did we get the term from the Chinese, or what?

It's not properly known. It may have been taken from a nepalese word that means 'bamboo eater'. And hey, they both eat bamboo. By the way, red pandas were named first.
