Mini Mask Reviews - Scooby-Doo by Rubies
In the first of what will probably only be a few of these 'Mini Mask Reviews', I'm talking about the basic Rubies 'Scooby-Doo' rubber costume mask that you can pick up on various sites like Amazon.
So, let's start with the basics.
The mask is easy to put on, fitting even my gigantic head without much difficulty. However, in its default form, I can't fit my glasses on whilst wearing it, meaning my vision is poor.
There's a soft, powdery 'film' that does seem to want to come off no matter how much I clean the mask. It leaves a slight residue on my hands after wearing the mask, which does easily come off with a basic hand-washing, but it can still be a bit irritating.
Despite applying a bit of heat and attempting multiple storage solutions, as you can see, the mask can be a little lumpy. I'm sure this can be fixed. Just my personal experience.
I'm sure a lot of my problems can be fixed with slight modifications, different storages, or other methods, but this is just what I've experienced.
So, to make things short:
Pros:
- Easy to Put On & Take Off
- Fairly Priced in My Opinion
- Easy to Store & Clean
- Can Be Easily Used in Puppy Play
Cons:
- Not Easy to Wear with Glasses
- Leaves Powdery Film on Hands
- Ends Up a Bit Lumpy Post Storage
- Vision is a Bit Iffy
- No Tag on Collar
Potential Mods:
- Replacing Eyes with Mesh Eyes
- Cutting a Slit in Back of Neck for Clearance
- Adding Some Padding to Keep Shape

Yeah, that's apparently the somewhat cheaper Chinese-made version, from when Rubies started to cut costs. I think that "powdery film" is some kind of talcum powder Chinese latex mask manufacturers use. But if you sweat in the mask long enough, that seems to get rid of it. Then you can replace it with cornstarch or something the next time you clean the inside after sweating in it; it absorbs into the latex better and makes it last longer.
The Mexican-made version is better in comparison, being somewhat thicker latex and holding its shape better AND having the tag on the dog collar, along with a slit in the back. Hopefully that Chinese version is just a temporary thing for when Mexican manufacturing is overflowed or something.
