Far away from the events unfolding at that very moment in the forgotten beach cave. Where the daylight felt neither cold nor warm, and where past, present and future slipped untouched through the smooth tentacles of deep-sea anemones. In the depths of the seas, where time stood still and where no one had yet heard the cry of new life. Where no wind blew and instead the waves told stories; stories that everyone who listened already knew and that were not worth retelling. There, in a place seemingly as old as time itself. A paradise, hidden on the ocean floor. Where ageing was unknown, and illness was not feared. There lied Deepwatch.
Under the cover of darkness, Teniber swam to the temple complex that night. There was no one there to greet her, no one to ask her bothersome questions, no one to stop her. But who would? The inhabitants of Deepwatch had far too much respect for her and kept a polite distance. After all, she was the high priestess of Deepwatch.
Teniber sighed. Beyond the sound of the sea and the noises of the colourful underwater world, her melancholy voice was the only sound. It went unheard.
Teniber was a striking woman. She had a flowing mane of hair, as black as the abysses of the deepest depths. Her fur, by contrast, was as radiant as fresh snow. Golden jewellery adorned her head, her arms, her hands and the shark-shaped scaly tail that grew from her hips. The latter was the distinguishing mark of her clan, of her race. Teniber had been born into the prestigious role of high priestess. An eternity ago; too long ago for anyone to remember the exact day. She had been the last child of her clan. The child of the sunrise, who would usher in the era of happiness and hold the title of high priestess – for now and for all time. So, at least, the legends said. And if these legends were right about one thing, it was that happiness reigned in Deepwatch. Bliss for everyone else, that is..
As she thought of her role as guardian of peace, prosperity and happiness, the high priestess sighed even more heavily and loudly than before. To the outside world, to those who adored her, she wore a mask of cheerfulness. But her heart was heavy. Everyone around her was carefree and joyful. No one could or would imagine a different life. But Teniber was lonely. For years. Decades. An eternity. She endured it. Day after day. And just as she had done every night for an eternal time, so too on this very night she sent a prayer out into the world. Before the altar of her late mother, the woman who had given birth to Teniber but whom she had never known, who had imposed this burden upon her as an immortal high priestess, and who had passed away as the last of her clan.
"Please, let me too finally find true happiness! Please …!"
