Some more images from my ongoing Equestria dreamscape. I will have more images directly related to the immediate story/ dream arc up later this week. These are some random images I have done of my time wandering around Ponyville. They are of some of the places and people I have seen.
Many of the buildings in Ponyville are made of mud and timber construction with thatched roofs. The building in the top left is the town public house "the bucking mare" where Black and Tan http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6260636/ works. It is typical of many of the structures in town.
The windmill in the bottom right is actually located a little ways outside of town. It is owned by an old earth pony called Grist. He is a widower and along with his daughter Cogs they keep the old place running. Mill not only grinds grain but also acts a water pumping station for several farms in area. Its vanes are like the sails on a Chinese junk and can be adjusted to make the best use of the wind. Unfortunately for some reason the poor windmill sails has been the victim of several collisions with a particularly speedy rainbow colored pegasus pony http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6337354/ which has resulted in several pony-size holes and tears being made in them.
Needless to say Grist has not been amused by these accidents and has demanded reparations from the rainbow colored pegasus. After the latest incident Grist's patience finally wore out and went to the authorities. After much debate, arguing, and yelling it was decided that not only would Rainbow Dash have to pay for the repairs to the windmill, but this time she would have to do the repairs herself as a form of public service. She was not happy. Grist just smiled.
The two ponies in bottom left are a brother and sister. Their family runs one of the oldest and largest egg farms in the area. The brother is actually a rather accomplished harmonica player to! At least once a week they bring their eggs into town for sale on market day.
The earth pony with the cart is one of the local artisans who sells his wares in the town market square. His speciality is weaving straw, reed, bark into baskets, hats, mats, and window screens. He apparently makes excellent wares and even his small cart is primarily made from his woven work.

Yes! I'm delighted to see things like this! More!
Hm, considering the pictographic signs both seen in the show and typical of similar periods in our world, I'm wondering what is used by "The Bucking Mare."
Poor Dash. I bet she had to take lessons from Rarity (or maybe Fluttershy) as to how to do the sewing on the mill's sails.
I'm trying to decide what period in our history parallels the architecture you've seen in Equestria. It's post-Anglo-Saxon, as they have multiple stories and chimneys. It looks generally half-timbered, but I don't believe that goes along with thatched roofs.
Then again, I've become convinced that much of the "technology" shown is actually magical in nature and that somewhere there's unicorns employing learned (rather than special talent) spells to make various conveniences like refrigerators, lighting...

According to what I've read, Lauren Faust herself assumes much the same thing.

Yeah I was kind of wondering about that myself, but looking at some of art from the show http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Ponyville it sure looks like thatch. And yes the contradictory technology is confusing. Especially since I am being used as a sound board/ consultant for a MLP roleplaying dice and paper game at this time. No I can not go into details at this time. Yes it should be coming out soon. Stay tuned.
I love this sort of detail and information.
But the name of that pub -- the Bucking Mare? Given what "buck" is often used as a synonym for in MLP fanfic and art, that sounds oddly racy for a country town like Ponyville.
And heh, poor Dashie. She really needs to learn how to watch her steering.

Or English countryside, but either way the building is somewhat similar to the style of houses found in the show http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Ponyville just a little less toony in appearance.
The overhang (jetty), fireplaces/chimneys, steep roofs, and decorative half-timbering definitely resembles the Tudor style of the 15th century.
Hm, digging through Wikipedia tells me that thatching was still common in country buildings (in England and Europe) until the 19th century due to a lack of practical alternatives. This may be another indication that Ponyville is a rather rural community.

Well
Tom_Clowder are of the opinion that Equestria/ Ponyville are very roughly in the either the last half of the 19th century or the first decade of the 20th. Any anachronistic items like the Vinyl Scratches DJ deck and modern ovens are done so that younger audience, and quite a bit of the older crowd, could relate to it easily. Of course magic does act as a wildcard in this case.

There were revivals (or recreations) of the Tudor style and appearance.
You almost have to separate the "writer's reason" from the "in-setting reason" for things. Including things familiar to the viewer is a no-brainer -- half an hour is barely enough for a complete story let alone an explanation of unrelated details. But we fans can pass around rationalizations as long as we want. Things like your dreamscape offerings gives us a wonderful venue for that.
