In Rome, in the 1st Century C.E., there was an Emperor, commonly known as Caligula, who went mad and appointed his horse to the Senate. Or so the story goes, though it is almost certainly apocryphal. Still, the Roman historian Suetonius, born roughly 30 years after Caligula's death, wrote that Caligula's horse, whose name was Incitatus, lived in luxury in a marble stall with purple blankets and an ivory manger. He wore a gold collar inlaid with precious stones, ate oats laced with gold flakes and was waited on by servants. Not a bad life for anyone, if you can get it, though one does have to wonder what effect a steady diet of gold flakes would have on the digestion.
Whatever the truth of the matter might be, and in spite of the fact that it isn't even October yet, Adonis has apparently decided to don a collar and toga and live it up in Roman splendor for this Halloween. Big points go to the artist for actually researching the clothes she drew for him, and for taking pains to get the collar just right.
Now who wants to get the great Roman Consul another goblet of wine?
(I make no claims that any of this is factual or true in any way. Ancient Rome is a bit out of my limited area of expertise. But I will say that if there's going to be a category for dragons in the Species list here, then there should be one for unicorns, too!)

I don't remember where I first heard the story, but I've always been fascinated with horses both mythological and historical, so it was inevitable that I should run across it at some point. It's kind of a cool story, too, even if it is a total fantasy. As for Caligula, he was a real piece of work. Though I suppose I might be inclined to be a bit nasty if I went through life being called "little boots", too!
It is a wonderful picture, and she really did a fantastic job with it. I do love the jeweled collar he's wearing, and his eyes are so pretty. It's really cool to find someone who is this good at horses and unicorns, too, and she actually seems to know quite a bit about them. So I was really happy with how this turned out.
