Portrait of an Honest Liar

This story is a fairly naturalistic exploration of how an ordinary fox learned to lie, cheat and steal like humans. We’ll begin with a quiet valley in Tuscany—vineyards, low stone houses, and the old Roman road half-swallowed by grass. From there: a fox-kit, born not quite like the others, already watching. Then his mother, a creature of caution and instinct; a father who is present mostly as rumor and scent. Early lessons—hunger, cunning, performance. A first lie, small but important. A traveling fair. A human voice that lingers. And finally, the first hint that John is not merely surviving—he is learning to shape the world.

This felt less like reading a story and more like watching a legend slowly learn how to breathe. The way you turned Honest John’s cunning into something almost poetic was genuinely mesmerizing.

Aaa I’m glad honestly the way you write characters feels very alive, especially John. He doesn’t just feel like a villain or trickster, he feels like someone slowly becoming the role the world expects from him, and that makes him weirdly fascinating to read.
