I'm posting this progress shot in case my next few steps fail horribly. This is for Mick, I've been working on it for the past week. I still want to relief the wing membrane by one level, the back foreleg by one level, the back hind leg by one level, and try to relief the tail by two levels to put it in the background.
This is my very first full project with the carving. I've had a ton of fun with it, and looking forward to more.
Also, the picture I shamelessly ripped was

First of all, you are doing a fantastic job! There's only two things I can see from this picture that you might need to work on. I'm not sure how deep you went, but if you're planning on lowering down the parts you want to you need to make sure that the back is deep enough. I've done a couple of projects where I didn't make the back deep enough and the details don't show up too well. I can also tell the parts where you used a chisel and other parts where you didn't. That's not really a huge deal, and when working with a dragon like this it might look cool to have the background rough and gouged.
I am tempted to lower the back just a smudge more, but only in the bottom right 3 holes. This is because the tail has to come down 2 levels, and the hind paw 1 to give the right perspective.
I don't have a detail set yet, to clean up those rough edges, but I hope to get one here soon ish. Maybe in a month or so after I do a few more plaques.
Thanks for the advice. It's nice to hear I'm doing well, and hope to finish this soon.

This is more of a personal preference, but I like to have the entire back the same level. It's not a bad thing if you don't, and if you don't it would save you a healthy amount of time. And that detail set is a life saver, but boy are they hard to sharpen. Strop them all the time so you don't have to put them on the stone cause that's tough.
I'm excited to see the finished piece. I'm really looking forward to how you plan on doing the wing membrane.
