While Irvine was recovering he got all sorts of snacks and treats and things. He's finally back with the other rats in the main cage but on his last days I let him have a little piece of a Dorito. One of the things I love about rats are their little hands and how they hold things when they eat.
Irvine has recovered completely. It's hard to imagine that a week ago I was treating him for a cold, and the next day I seriously thought he wasn't going to make it. Yet he turned around and will be with us for a bit longer. I try to tell anyone who gets a pet rat that they need to watch for these kinds of things and be ready, as a rat can go from healthy looking to deathly ill very fast and respiratory illnesses are one of the biggest risks in losing one. With their short lifespans it's hard enough knowing you'll only have them for a couple of years.
Still, Derprat is much better and he was very photogenic in this pic. He's what's known as an agouti, which means his coloration is the same as a wild rat. He's also a dumbo so his ears are on the side of his head instead of on the top like most rats.
And he loved that Dorito.

I've had rats before, and my boyfriend and I currently have one after having lost her little buddy Nugget (adopted from
when her landlord didn't want them in their apartment). We're torn on if we want to get more, because they do live such short lifespans... But I love rats! They are so friendly and cute and akls;dfn;alksflakns;lkandfl;kansf omnomnom they eat so cute.

This reminds me of when I was a kid, my mother was doing a bone densitometry(sp?) study on rats, they had like, giant white rats. When the study was over, the control group (the ones raised normally without any medication), were basically sold as pets and she got one of them. This thing was in my memory the size of a chihuahua and she was very smart and loveable while we had her, though she had this habit of opening her cage and going to the kitchen to crawl into the area under the stove where we kept the pots and going to sleep in them, I guess she liked how warm it was.
Irvine has been saved by the power of love, delicious noms, and probably being a bit too dumb to die. Glad to hear that everyone's favorite derprat is back in (in)action!
So is this one of those rare times where doesn't think that you hate him because you feed him delectable treats, or is he just as convinced as ever that you exist to torment him by loving and feeding him?
