AC Sketch: Jack Sawyer and Wolf from The Talisman
Okay, I got some really good con sketch requests this weekend, but this was probably my favorite sketch of the weekend. Vish's sketchbook was themed after Stephen King stories. I've only read a few of Stephan King's books, but I did read The Talisman, which he co-wrote with Peter Straub, and this is one of my all-time favorite characters.
In the book, young Jack Sawyer has to make a quest from one coast of the country to the other, while flipping back and forth between our world and a smaller, more agrarian and magical parallel world. Along the way he meets a werewolf in the other world, who calls himself simply "Wolf," and who amazingly knew Jack's father and recognizes him by his smell. Wolf is simple-minded, almost childish, but fiercely loyal, and becomes Jack's protector for awhile.
It's been awhile since I read the book. I don't think this exact scenario would have taken place ... if I recall, he spent most of the time as a very large, wolfish human; when he was in wolf form, he was dangerous, and Jack had to keep away from him for his own safety. But this image captures the feeling that I have of the relationship between the two characters.
I was very happy with it. I think, so was Vish. Please enjoy.
EDIT: I credited Straub in the text but forgot to mention him in the image file itself. That's corrected now.

The Talisman is both King and Straub, let's not forget. I met peter at a horror book convention in the mid 90s and got my hardcover edition of The Talisman autographed.
King is way too popular to score autographs anymore. Don't even know if Make A Wish Foundation could get one from him nowadays.
You may have missed the detail that Wolf has hairy palms.

Hey, that's me! It's a well known fact that The Talisman is the best book ever written on the subject of anything, ever. It also taught me that the meaning of life is to listen to Creedence Clearwater Revival at high volume, to drink as much Mad Dog as possible, and to distrust all televangelists with a rabid paranoia.
First I noticed the pic and told myself that I loved it because I've always liked human/furry friendship pics, especially when the human is young, and also because that wolf is adorable with the overalls and glasses.
But now that I know it's based on a book, I'll definitely try to find it and give it a read.

I loved this book. I'm so glad you kept bugging me about it.
I really enjoyed the book and it surprised me, I kinda thought stephen king was homophobic in some ways.. I guess I was wrong or Peter Straub is gay or something.. The positive portrayal of the retarded kid in the evil school was very heartwarming.. but it felt like stephen king did that scene.. weird no?
And yeah I really dug on the relationship between wolf and Jack. The book was a masterpiece such as I have not seen in many years. I'll be reading the next one soon.
Very close, intimate friendships are a joy to read. It's very hard to write them and when you can pull it off, it's something truly special. Check out The "Doona" Series by Ann McCaffery to see similar, but more sci fi books.
Cooner you're one of the few that have consistantly given me really high quality books, shows and other forms of enterntainment to listen to, read, or watch. Thanks!

There were a few parts that annoyed me, but overall I liked the book quite a bit. It's not the most dark or depressing book out there, but there are some dark parts and some depressing parts. If you're okay with Stephen King type authors in general, it's a good fantasy story.
I've heard very mixed reviews about the sequel(s), though.
