Mostly that there's a genetic predisposition, despite the fact that his parents and oldest brother are fine. Of course, if you have an infamous sibling no one will talk about with you, your mind starts to imagine all sorts of things.

He wants to be an electronic musician (using a computer to compose). Above average intelligence, but not genius-level. Somewhat naive and sheltered, due to his parents being overly involved in his life. They live with terrible guilt that Jack turned out the way he did partially because they didn't pay much attention to him, and by the time they realized something was wrong it was too late.

His younger brother was a change-of-life 'surprize' for his parents, so Jack is almost 18 years older, and for all intents and purposes was the younger (by only a couple years) of two boys while growing up.

Imagine a malicious cat with a human-level IQ. )Lack of parental control or interest when it could have made a difference. Isolation from most of his peers due to his much higher IQ. Early trauma from a botched procedure that damaged his eyes. It wasn't any one single thing.
