At the very least, I feel like it's a useful exercise to throw every association that comes to mind at the design and see what sticks. I can always pare it down and strip one unnecessary detail after the next away afterwards -- you have to have something on the page to edit, and I guess the most immediate ideas are as fair a place as any to start <3
That's a good way to put it. c: It makes me almost cringe remembering some initial sketches of Big Bad (can you say 'facial piercings'?).
But really, character exploration is always super important. If its one thing teachers press on you, its to never be too married to your characters in early development. Whether you think it might look great or downright hideous, its all about being adventurous. c:

Yeah, I'm trying to let go of my security blanket of photo reference (it's totally my crack cocaine as a realist) and explore distortion and exaggeration and strange geometry. Even if I wind up coming back around to more of a literal design for this guy, I'll feel a lot better if it's at the end of a good bit of meandering ^_^
