So like....
...ever notice that the outlines of the color stripes in Celestia's hair are ALWAYS the same shape as one of the edges of her hair, on every frame?
When I realized what they were actually doing, I was like "BUT THAT'S BLOODY SIMPLE" XD I thought they were doing something a lot more tricksy than just five copies of the same shape, under a mask the same shape. :P
(I probably could have done this better, masked gradient patches to make the hair change color over its length)
(And yes, I actually bought a copy of Chank Woodrow font just for messin' with stuff like this. :D )
[EDIT]: the outline now uses a color ramp like in the show
[EDIT 2]: Added shape hints, and for once they actually WORKED o_o
[EDIT 3]: Yellow gradient overlay under the mask

Well, it's a liiiittle more complicated than that if you look at the series- there each fill is actually filled with a gradient ramp from one end to the other- the colors change, or get lighter. And the sparkles are not quite this big. And the line on the outside is also a gradient, so that it sort of matches up with the color from one edge to another.
And they always make either the shapes wider than this, or the undulation less pronounced, so it doesn't clip out quite so much.
And I think the show hair morphs more slowly.
But....yeah. This is the basic idea.
