The two horses walked into a large orchard of apples. Butterquill looked about her with awe in her eyes. Specks, who’d apparently been here before, just kept his sights to the road ahead.
“What is this place?” Butterquill asked.
Specks was about to answer when a voice nearby startled them. “This here is the Sweet Apple Acres.” An orange pony turned from a nearby tree and addressed the pair. “Howdy Speckles, who’s your friend?”
“This,” Specks said, nodding to the cyan horse, “is Butterquill. She’s from a publishing company not too far from town and plans on moving here. Her stuff is going to be moved here tomorrow and I was wondering if I could get some help.”
“You need a place to stay, sugar cube?” Butterquill said, bounding over to the newcomer.
“Um, well,” Butterquill said, sounding uncertain but felt very relaxed, mainly because of Applejacks unexpected friendliness. “I would love to save myself a long trip.”
“Then it’s settled.” Applejack said with a nod. “You can stay with us for as long as you like. We’ll try to do our apple picking without getting in your mane.”
“Oh, I’d love to help you. My main hobby is writing, but I could never say no to hard work.”
“Well then,” Applejack said with a grin, “I suppose we’ll get off even better then!”
Butterquill turned to Specks. “Specks, um, I mean, Mr. Highoof, thank you for all you’ve done.”
Specks gave another soft smile and a nod. “It was my pleasure Butterquill. Friends always help other friends.” Butterquill blushed.
“Well, times a waistin’! We gotta’ let Speckles get on his way or else you’ll NEVER move here!”
Despite what either of the two ponies wanted, Applejack yanked Butterquill away and left Specks to start his trip to the publication company.
Walking alongside her, Applejack asked Butterquill some questions.
“So, where’d you say you were from again?”
“Author-hoof publications. A small publication company outside of town.”
Applejack nodded. “How long have you been in Ponyville?”
“I just arrived this morning.”
“Just this mornin’?! Well, I better invite you to the rest of the gang!”
“What gang?” Butterquill asked.
“Why, my five best friends! I’m sure Twilight and Fluttershy are nearby, and Rainbow Dash is always overhead. Rarity, not too sure about her. She has her dress makin’ business and all. Pinky Pie is always bouncing around, probably wind up around here too.”
Butterquill stopped. “Wait.”
“What’s up?” Applejack asked.
“You, you’re,” Butterquill stammered.
“What’s up Butterquill? Spit it out!” Applejack said in as hospitable a way as she could.
“You six saved Equestria from the evil Luna, and later from Discord!”
“Yep, we did,” Applejack said, stamping her hoof with a triumphant look in her eye, “me and my friends took out those two creeps by the use of our friendship. Ain’t no powerfuller a magic than that.” Applejack turned and started walking again, but Butterquill didn’t follow.
Butterquill swallowed then spoke. “I really don’t think it’s necessary for me to intrude, then. Especially after all you’ve done.”
Applejack looked confused as she turned around. “Huh? What’d you mean? I’m lettin’ you stay here.”
“Right,” Butterquill said, her ears dropping, “but, you see, I, I can’t stay here.”
“Why not?” Applejack asked, fully confused now.
“Because, I, I mean, I, I’m no pony that’s important. At least, nowhere near what you six have accomplished.”
Applejack’s face changed. She could see what Butterquill was stressing over, and smiled. “Ah, shucks, I see now. You think that just because you didn’t thwart a thousand-year old evil or fought off an Ursa Minor that you have no place being our friends? Why, that’s a bunch of hog-wash!”
Butterquill’s ears rose, and she was the one to look puzzled now. “Really? You mean it?”
“Absolutely!” Applejack said, putting a hoof on Butterquill’s shoulder. “I never turn down hard workers, just like I never turn down another good honest pony like yourself.”
Butterquill smiled. Applejack seemed to see a lot in her so quickly, something Butterquill thought she could do with Applejack but unfortunately only produced negative expectations. “Thank you Applejack.”
Once the pair got to their home, Applejack looked out at the orchard from the porch. There were three ponies standing out there. One was nestled at the base of a tree, one seemed to be interested by some little bunnies, while another had just disappeared over the bend with a leap and bound.
“Hey girls!” Applejack hollered. “We have us a new pony in town, and I’d like you to meet her!”
Soon the three ponies were at their side, introducing themselves to Butterquill, who in turn introduced herself to them. “So, you want to work on the Apple family farm until you move in?!” Pinkie Pie asked with a perky grin.
“Yes, I do,” Butterquill said, “I’ve always been a hard worker, even though I like taking time off to read and write.” Upon hearing the last part of the sentence, Twilight smiled. She’d found another companion in literature.
“And, and parties?” Pinkie Pie asked, hopping up and down.
“Well, yes, I do enjoy a good celebration when the time calls for it, but I also get just as much enjoyment when I reflect on something, a sunset or a little woodland creature.”
“You like animals, then?” Fluttershy asked.
“Well, yes, I do. Actually, I’m a lot like all of you, a hard worker, a writer and reader, the occasional party-goer, but also the nurturing, considerate type. I even like to dress fancy in the appropriate context. I’m sorta’ competitive too, just with my point of view sometimes.” She added the last part with a nervous grin.
“Well, you sound like a good mix of all of us!” Twilight said, voicing the thoughts of the rest of the group, “we’d love to hang out with you once you’re all moved in.”
“We could help you move, even.” Fluttershy offered.
Butterquill wasn’t sure, just like with Applejack’s living offer. But, after looking to her and receiving a nod, she smiled and said, “that sounds perfect.”
“Alright!” Pinkie Pie shouted, pumping a hoof into the air.
