OK... I'm gonna try uploading one of my songs (Vera and Sedge, I believe you've both heard this song, but this is an alternate version that I recently rediscovered, and now I think I prefer it). I've chosen a sad one (but then again, almost all of them are), called "There Are Times...". It was written way back in February of 1993 (yes, that long ago!), after the love of my life broke up with me. One day, while the wounds were still fresh, I was at work when I just caught a momentary glimpse of her shopping at the store across from the one I worked at. It became the first line of the song ("Caught a glimpse of you yesterday...").
Now, as I've mentioned before, I am not a proficient musician. And I have never owned any professional recording equipment. There's a reason why this song sounds like it was recorded on a hand-held tape recorder, and that's because it was. I recorded a backing track with most of the music and the harmony vocals, and then played that back on one tape machine while I recorded the main vocals on another one. Like Robinson Crusoe, it's primitive as can be. But still, I think I managed OK for what I had to work with.
WHAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT THE SONG: The recording quality, and maybe the tempo could've been just a touch faster. The music is also very simple and is basically three chords repeating themselves throughout the song, but I wanted the lyrics to be more of the focal point of the song anyway. The rhythm track is a little cheesy, but it's from a cheap keyboard, so what do you expect?
WHAT I DO LIKE ABOUT THE SONG: The vocal harmonies in the second verse and chorus, and the lyrics, which are among my favorites that I've ever written. It was one of the first times I ever made myself vulnerable and truly wrote from my heart. The lyric that says "I know I need too much, but that's the way it's always been" is one of my favorite lines I've ever written, because it's simple and brutally honest. It's an admittance of weakness... which is not always an easy thing to admit to.
So, I hope whoever listens to this likes it. I'm the first to admit that it's a little rough... but I'm proud of it anyway.
I'm going to print the full lyrics here, because they may be difficult to make out in some parts, especially in the beginning, where I sang a little too quietly.

Caught a glimpse of you yesterday
But only a glimpse, and then you were gone away
Leaving me a memory
But memories don't give me what I need
I need to feel your touch
But I will never feel your touch again
I know I need too much
But that's the way it's always been
And there are times when I wish that this knife
That you've stuck in my back had finished me off
And there are times when I feel so down
That it's hard to believe I was ever up
And there are times when I'm so afraid
That I can't return to the world again
And there are times when I cry
So I see that there's someone new
Well I always knew that he had his eyes on you
Our love was hardly dead
Before you decided to be with him instead
Well does he make you happy
The way I used to do (when you let me)?
When you let me in
When our love was new
Well are you gonna break his heart
The way that you broke mine?
What about when you get tired
And decide that it's time to move on, to let go?
Does it ever cross your mind
That it's not much fun on the other side?
And there are times when I almost wish
That we'd never met, and we'd never kissed
And there are times when I still believe
That maybe someday, you will see
And there are times when I want to move on
But I don't know where to start
And there are times when I never want to give anybody else
The key to my heart
My heart
There are times
There are times...

Thanks very much! Yeah, believe me, I'm well aware of the inferior recording quality... but there probably was no such thing as Soundforge when I recorded this (1996). All of the songs I've been putting up here date back at least that far. If I ever get around to recording new material, it will hopefully be of much better quality.
No, I don't consider that too presumptuous lol! I'm actually flattered that you liked the song enough to take that much of an interest in it! ^_^ Interesting results... unfortunately, speeding up the tempo that way changes the key of the song (which I like how it is) but it definitely serves as a good example of what can be done with the program. Thanks for taking the time and trouble!
I should explain that none of these songs were ever really intended to be heard by anyone outside of a small circle of my friends (sometimes, not even). They were recorded entirely without computer programs or other professional recording equipment. A hand-held tape recorder, a boom box for playback... that was about the extent of my "studio" lol. So these songs are as they are, and I've learned to accept them as such. But I've never ruled out the possibility of re-recording them under better technological circumstances, should the opportunity ever arise.
Hey-- I see you're going to Anthrocon! Maybe I'll see you there!
