As 'sweeps month' begins to wind down, I'll be presenting some of the best stuff yet from my 'big black sketch book' - most of them from the 1990s...
During the 1980s, I began to take quite an interest in independent comic book titles with 'funny animal' characters. Besides the obligatory anthology titles like "Albedo: Anthropomorphics" and "Critters", I enjoyed seeing the rare comics that spoofed other titles - such as "Radioactive Geriatric Gerbils" and "Pre-Teen Dirty-Gene Kung Fu Kangaroos" (each one a parody of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles").
One of the more novel titles was "Hamster Vice", a take-off of the then-popular TV show "Miami Vice". It was originally published by Blackthorne Comics, even though it ran for only nine issues. Its artist/creator was a young lad from New Jersey named Dwayne Ferguson - who I became friends with, after meeting him at one of the A.F.A. meeting in lower Manhattan. I've maintained correspondence with him (by 'snail-mail' and E-mail), since my leaving New York in late 1992...
But it was during a comic book convention in NYC during mid-1992 that I not only had one of the last chances to meet him in person, he was nice enough to render one of the characters from "Hamster Vice" - 'Hammy' - in my "BBS". Naturally, I'd like to share this rare image with all of you...
And, in case anyone is wondering, Dwayne Ferguson has made a name for himself in the publishing industry, as one of the folks behind DieHard Studio - where all-new stories for all ages are being printed. In addition, the studio has gone high-tech, to the point that you can now buy back issue apps of "Hamster Vice"! To find out how, go to www.DieHardStudio.com

It was usually those discount shops and flea markets where I was able to obtain really rare stuff - that no one had suspected it had any real value at the time - such as an issue of "E-Man" #5, that had one of the few G-rated appearances of 'Omaha, the Cat Dancer' (by Reed Waller and Kate Worley) in a spoof of those old full-color full-page Hostess Cake ads; I got my copy for just 50 cents!
I remember 'Cutey Bunny', too, as well as R.L. Crabb's 'Junior Jackalope' and 'Suicide Squirrel', among other rarely-seen independent (and inexpensive) comics. Another title I'd bought in the past was "Entropy Comics" - featuring the artwork of a relative unknown who now goes by the nom of
Tim Kangaroo! =OQ|

I found her first in a used bookstore I was used to get comics from till I was in high school also got my first turtles comic, captain carrot 1 and first saw bullet crow (not to mention phantom bunny) as well as some other more mainstream stuff then I returned and the comics were gone and when they were back they were seriously slim pickings (also I got some bernie wrightson stuff too even got books there) I would later find another one in a comic shop that seemed to get furry stuff in the bargain bin and some of the tpbs
