Beautiful work. I have a question about your technique. How do you choose your colors? I notice the white belly fur is actually a very faint shade of orange, and the shadows go through range from purple to grey...is there a particular reason for those colors, or is it a matter of random experimentation?
Hmm, looks like it's to communicate a warm sunlight, and the purple tinged shadows are to increase contrast. Sunlight has different color temperatures throughout the day, and some (very talented) artists are able to alter their palettes in order to realistically represent that.
That's kind of what I found in my own outside research. But I would say that the purplish shadows are not just to increase contrast. Shadows in real life are caused when light shining on a surface is blocked, so the surface is lit by the reflections from everything around it. That's not exactly the same as making it darker. Shadows in real life are purplish-blue, at least when they're outdoors.
I'm no expert, I could be completely wrong. It definitely looks best when the shadows are painted purplish-blue though!
