Look what I found, somebody threw out a perfectly good mantis. Relocated to the garden instead of on the trash can. I can't remember the name of my image stacking software, so I had to combine three pictures in Photoshop (poorly)

the answer is yes and yes. I once found one just sitting on the sidewalk... a brown one. I carefully picked it up to put it someplace safer, and it rolled it's eyes around to give me a look much like this one. It seemed to be able to tell I was helping it, cause it stopped struggling around once it looked at me, and let me move it someplace.
Interesting, though he has the peculiar look of catching someone doing something inappropriote, or at least that's how it looks to me. Or he appears to be up to something. :#

These are possibly my favorite insects. Don't think there are any species in my part of the world though. And I have only seen one once, when I was in Croatia. Had to pick it up to get a decent picture since it kept being not still.
