A while back I was driving down a dirt road at night when I saw something black ambling across the road. I slowed, but didn't stop. The skunk did. "Skunks need to learn when to and when not to stand their ground." I said to myself and continued forward at an even slower pace. "Afterall, a car can take a spray and the skunk would be a black and white pancake on the road." The skunk held it's ground. I stopped six feet from it and gave a light nip from my horn.
Beep-eep!
The skunk stamped it's rear legs and raised it's tail. At that moment, my temporary insanity lifted. Yes, skunks do need to learn that, but no way in hell would I be the teacher. Half the body paneling on an 03 Honda Element is textured plastic. Dirt and dust is impossible to clean off those panels. I could only imagine how hard skunk spray would be to remove.
After backing fifteen feet from the skunk, we stared at each other for three minutes before the skunk continued forward across the road at it's own leisurely pace.
I had wrecked a plastic front before and it cost over six hundred dollars to replace and install the new front face. Had I been sprayed, I would have ripped the front off much faster than before and discarded it roadside.
Moral of the story: Skunks will do as they please. Tell them otherwise at your own risk.
