So yeah.. my first fursuit.. thing.
Something I've been working on for the past couple of months that's been eating up a lot of my time.
I learned a lot from working on this! Tried lots of new things, and there is so much that I would do differently next time. Or perhaps will go back to fix at a later date, but for now I don't think I could bare to work on this any longer. :|
Apart from the head and wings, it's all pretty rushed, since I had a due date for this to be finished.
It's quite big, and tall.
I made some digitgrade stilts for the legs. This is one thing I would definitely do differently next time. I was so paranoid that they would be unusable if I made them too tall, so they ended up rather short and fat and didn't really acheive the look I was going for.
The wings move with the wearer's arms. They fold out when the arms are extended. You can't really tell from the photos, but they're also rather.. big. So transport and storing them is a slight issue. Next time I will try to make some fully collapsable wings. I have no idea what to do with these ones, now...
Other things I will hopefully adjust some time -
The tail sits far too high, needs to be modified to slope down a bit. I gave it some leather armour/spikes down the base of the tail but that's only visible from the back.
More airbrushing. Ran out of time, but I'd like to give it more color gradients.
Claws are way too small. Again paranoia driven since I thought they might fall off easily if too big. But they fastened on surprisingly well.
And I'd like to tailor it so it isn't so baggy around the crotch.
I was hoping to give it more fibre optic stuff in the tail, but again ran out of time.
I also finally got a photo of the fibreoptics lit up in the mane - http://i872.photobucket.com/albums/.....ibreoptics.jpg
Aaand, a video of it, also featuring Zambuka's fursuit -

Much thanks to
delicious-oil for his help and patience being my model for this thing. He gets at least one gold star.

I said it before and I'll say it again. That is an amazing job by any standard and an exceptional job for a first time. Love both the fiber optics as well as the stuff hanging from the horns. Great work with the wings and a very interesting idea to make them move with the wearers arm. And yeah that looked tall before I saw that video.
Gotta say it, I love your attention to detail in all the work you do. It makes seeing stuff by you a complete joy to behold.

LOOKS SO COOL! O.O
I remember seeing another video for wing types, cheap, maybe bigger and more dramatic. I think in both cases though, they're always gonna stick out.

Thanks. I wanted to try using stilts for it, since the look of most padded digitgrade legs bothers me. Still didn't quite get the look I wanted, but I know what to do next time. :3
I have a long way to go before I get to qarrezel kinda quality, I still don't entirely know what I'm doing xD
But thank you very much!

They usually look kinda short and stumpy to me, hence attempting to make it taller with stilts. I'll just keep trying I guess, and see what I can come up with. :)
Thanks again! It'll probably be a while before I try another fursuit project, I'm still kinda burned out from this one.

It's kinda baggy when the wearer isn't standing completely upright, which is most of the time.
The wings are made from.. lots of stuff. lol. They have an aluminium and wood frame, and the wing arms are padded with foam. The membrane itself is bleached lamb skin. So they're pretty heavy..
Thank you!

Actually the wings should be bigger. Otherwise they won't handle so much weight. And it has to start at the shoulders and end on the hips, otherwise it will come out of your body when flying.
And as for the feet, http://www.matrices.net/digitigrade.asp I found this page to be quite interesting, actually... The only thing is that they should be a little bit more angled to give the impression of balance.
And I think the tail is too short. For me, a good size is the height of the creature.
Just tips ;)

I did not use padded digitgrade legs because I am not fond of the way they generally looks, as mentioned in the description I made stilts, not padding.
Note this is an anthro dragon, it is not intended for flying and any bigger wings than this would have been a major issue as far as transport and storage.
Thanks, but your critique is incredibly obvious stuff and hard to miss for someone who know anything about art :/ If you know anything about suit construction, such critque would be far more useful.

O.o? Not really. I am just already quite aware of things like anatomical flaws. The actual construction side of it limits these things a lot, so getting more info on that side of it would be far more helpful! Fixing these problems with costume stuff is way harder than it is with fixing it in 2d art ><
Sorry if I come across sounding like a dick about it tho, was not my intention :c

Nah, it's okay.
As for the wings, you could try and add some sort of structure that allows it to be folded better. That way bigger wings could be added and would be easier to transport and store. I did that once, when I was veeeery little, on a tail. I stuck a metal wire in it and voila! I could fold it and it would stay, so I could store it and change the way it was any time I wanted. If I'm not wrong, it was about 20 inches, but considering that I put a really thin wire inside it... Yeah.
And anthro creatures with wings can fly. I mean, not the costumes in real life... XD
Also, as the cousin of the grandparent of my aunt would say: "Stating the obvious is the best way to make your point". So I'm used to do that a lot and it usually works very well, because sometimes not even the obvious is noticed. So I was just making sure you didn't miss a thing in your suit :3
BTW I sent you the link because I really thing the legs aren't digitigraded enough... They look like a plantigrade standing on its toes. A tiny little bit more of an angle between the legs and the paws would made it look better, in my opinion. But it's really cool, nevertheless.
And now I'm curious about one thing: Is it easy to move while wearing the costume?

Awesome, thank you. :3
I am aware that the wings do look "small" against the rest of the fursuit, and I know many anthro dragon characters are intended to fly. I usually do not think of anthro dragons this way though, the anthro dragons I draw tend to have a similarly small wing size.
No worries. Next time I attempt stilts I will be making them much taller. Since I had never tried anything of this nature before I was super paranoid the wearer would fall backwards easily, and they ended up all short-like. But after making them I have discovered they could be made significantly taller without having to worry about that.
Moving is relatively easily, the person wearing this managed to navigate over a stage and catwalks without any issues. Apparently standing still is them is the hardest though, gets tiring on the legs.

I CANNOT BELIEVE I FORGOT TO COMMENT ON THIS.
This is just so awesome, with particular emphasis on the AWE. For some reason I am especially in love with the fluffy spiky things on the back of the neck and the bony things down the spine. Actually, I am in love with everything.
Will you be taking this to FurcoNZ?
