Well, show me the way
To the next whiskey bar
Oh, don't ask why
Oh, don't ask why
Show me the way
To the next whiskey bar
Oh, don't ask why
Oh, don't ask why
For if we don't find
The next whiskey bar
I tell you we must die
I tell you we must die
I tell you, I tell you
I tell you we must die
Oh, moon of Alabama
We now must say goodbye
We've lost our good old mama
And must have whiskey, oh, you know why

A piece which is very important to me..
it was very interesting and exhausting in the making and more than once I wanted to destroy it with my bare hands and just smeared color on it and scratched away other parts. Nothing of this little bits can be seen on this photograph, it's more interesting in real life, but I still consider this one of my best works.
It's not hard to guess which time this piece represents and I hope it's as intense to watch as it was to paint, although it's horribly unperfect.
Painted, scratched and fingered with watercolors and acrylics (I'm beginning to like them).

I won't translate the title or the german part of the description because that wouldn't suit this artwork. I hope you understand that, if not I still won't translate it ;)

Kurt Weill, Bertholt Brecht, George Grosz....
For too many people, the past is dead, but there is much the past can teach us, in terms of art, in terms of thought, in terms of life, in terms of warning.
Have you seen Ingmar Bergman's film, THE SERPENT'S EGG? Critics hated it, but it reached into my head and terrified me in ways that few films have ever come close to achieving.
My mood is black right now and I have nothing coherent to say, but I appreciate your work.

According to Bergman's film, it was like living in a nightmare from which no escape was possible, while knowing, all the while, that an even worse nightmare was looming in the future.
But you have no idea what a source of refreshment and hope it can be, to find someone here on FA who takes inspiration from artists of the past. There are many good artists here, but most of them seem inspired only by pop culture -- and recent pop culture, at that. Their frames of reference rarely go beyond the past decade. It makes me wonder about the failure of cultural transmission from generation to generation, and leads me to fear that so much good and vital work of the past might end up buried and forgotten.

I think I have to watch this movie...it sounds familiar to me but I don't think I've seen it yet
what fascinates and terryfies me about this era are the parallels to today's world. I guess you are not very familiar with german inner politics but it keeps me reminding of the Weimar Republic more than I had ever feared before. Some politicians for example demand a change of the Basic Constitutional Law to make their planned surveillance laws legal.... It's frightening....
I totally agree with you...we often totally forget about the past. Sure we know the basic facts but due to the way history, music and art is taught in school only few have a real awareness of it.
However I really like many aspects of pop-culture too but somehow it seems like anything recent that inspires and fascinates me was inspired by the past as well..

One of the (dis?)advantages of my living without a TV set is that current pop-culture has become a faint whisper that rarely makes any sense, a vague blur in the distance that never quite resolves into anything tangible; in other words, a foreign language that I can't quite understand... whereas voices from the past are often compellingly clear to me, and they resonate more vividly with my experience and imagination.
As for Weimar: I am definitely out of touch with current politics in Germany, but I can see vague parallels with politics in Canada and *hideous* parallels with politics in the USA... and I agree with you, it is frightening. On the other hand, more and more Americans seem to be waking up to these parallels, which gives me a certain hope.
