Brandenburg Concerto #3, Movements 2 and 3, BWV 1048, by Johann Sebastian Bach
8 minutes 26 seconds
Movement 2, Adagio
This movement consists of only two notes. The intention was for the performer to improvise.
Movement 3, Allegro
Bach's six Brandenburg Concertos were an "audition" for the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721. They are Bach's, if not mankind's, finest works of music. Bach did not get the job. They laid on forgotten shelves for over a century and were not published until 1850.
When I was about 4 years old, I saw a commercial at Christmas time that used this movement, recorded by Walter (now Wendy) Carlos on the Moog Synthesizer (He did the music for A Clockwork Orange). I could never forget the intricate blissful sounds I heard that day. It was one of my goals in life to be able to play this piece myself. When I got my hands on a 4-track tape recorder in college, and realized that the piece's 12 lines of music could be distilled down to 7 without losing any notes, it was finally possible to do so! This version is the third time I recorded this piece.
Realized on Yamaha DX-100 synthesizer, effects boxes and Tascam Porta-1 4-track tape recorder. Best listened to with headphones.
For those furs who can not hear, I commissioned
feathery to depict a part of this movement in visual form. He does wonderful abstracts, and this is one of his best ever!
