Aside form some Photoshop specific key commands, anyone could easily bring this into any digital art program.

Works just fine in Gimp too. As long as the software has the overlay/colour layers and the burn/dodge tools it should work (and even if not you can probably adapt it)

Ah so you're one of those who paint in black and white values first before overlaying with colour. I prefer to work with colour right away but I don't always good results compared to starting with black and white values first.

Really nice tutorial. The layer diagrams are super helpful in visualizing what layer you're talking about and how you build your art.

you paint with overlay? that's a new trick to me. I probably won't do that for anything I draw from scratch since my tech is pretty well established, but if someone sends me a beautifully penciled version of something I'll definitely consider that when I color.

Ah so underpainting is the correct term? I always call it greyscale to color method lol

hehe yes. Folks who do traditional oil and watercolor painting often use what is called an "underpainting" to establish tone and value beneath the other layers. (Traditional artists work in layers too =3 )

Thanks for the tutorial! Because I don't understand digital layers very well, it left me with one final question:
Which layers are visible in the final piece when you flatten it?

From the looks of it all the layers are visible in the sense of photoshop's hidden setting, each layer builds on top of the ones below (like glazing in traditional media)

yeah, the colour and overlay layer effects are purely used to influence the layers below, the render layer is then for adding detail to this that wasn't on the original b&w or which you can't get just using overlay and colour layers

awesome! using what a digital paint tool can do! I still paint like "with a canvas and paints" but this tech make it easier and fast. (but need to practice it first) :D
