Muttropolis - Apple A Day
Artist's Note - By pure coincidence I drew this the day before Steve Jobs died when I was waiting for my connecting flight to visit my friends. I had about an hour and a half to kill and I figured I'd draw a comic and that I'd scan it when I got to my destination. Then Steve Jobs passed away the next day, when I had planned on posting the comic, and I figured it would be terrible timing to post a comic containing an obvious Apple product (implied anyways..heavily). The reason being is that I admire Mr. Jobs greatly, have been an Apple/Mac user since I could sit up on my own, and I didn't want it to turn into a platform to be sad instead of enjoying the comic(even though a lot of us are, I am as well) or hate on Mr. Jobs or Apple (I won't stand for it, that's just rude). These just happen to be the computers/technology I use, so take the joke and apply it to your OS of choice, cuz really, it could apply to ANYTHING.

Comic Description - Contrary to popular belief, the life of a freelance artist is a hard one. I have a very difficult time affording life's basics much less replacing necessary technology that I use for work. This takes a LOT of planning on my part and a techno-emergency can put a major dent in my wallet that will last for months if not more than a year.
I do not enjoy talking "latest and greatest" products with people because 9 times out of 10 it turns into a pissing contest where whatever technology I am using (and happy with, and planning on using for a great while) is out of date (let's face it, it happens within 6 months of any purchase, it's the nature of the beast) and I get mocked or chided because I didn't upgrade. I don't feel the need to toss a perfectly good computer every 6 months just because the technology has upgraded since my date of purchase. That is expensive and unnecessary for my purposes, and it is my choice. People can do what they want with their disposable income, and congrats to them for having it to begin with, I hope to have some myself someday, but mocking those who don't is really tacky. These are often people who have never had hardship, or have a hard time empathizing with the financial situations of others. Either way, it's not an enjoyable conversation, and I wish it didn't happen as often as it does.
That said, I'm still enjoying my MacBook Pro I got last year. I'm still paying my dad back for it, but it's proven to be a good investment. Maybe in a few years I'll find it necessary to replace it with "the latest and greatest", which will of course only last for half a year, and so on, and so forth.
RIP Steve Jobs - 1956-2011

If it isn't broke, don't fix it.
I adore my Macbook Pro, it was the first computer -I- bought and three years down the track, it still chugs along happily and does what I need it to do. I'll replace it when -I- want/need to, not when a magazine or someone who swaps out computers very 6 months tells me to.
In other words, seconded.

I get it if people are total technophiles and really want to have the latest gadget, but it's just not a financial priority for me and I don't like folks expecting it to be.
Some folks collect classic cars, I just want one of a decent price that can get me where I need to go, but I don't get classic car folks mocking my hatchback. (I don't think anyways!)

Some people just haven't learned how to play well with others, I'm afraid. I haven't experience too much of what you did, but tends more along the lines of Linux evangelists and "people who can't build their own computers have no business owning them", and it's just as annoying.
Eh, I'm a technophile, but I'm only aware of them. Sure, I know the latest-and-greatest, but do I own all of them? Hell no. I have better things for my money.
For instance, I think tablets are a neat idea, and I'd like to own one. Just with my budget, I don't feel it's worth a $300-500 investment of my funds. I might buy one when it reaches the price of a handheld console...but otherwise my life is fine without it.
I have to laugh at other "techies" that insist on owning the latest-and-greatest, but only use it to 20% of its potential. Like, those replacing their iPhone 4 for a 4S - but all they intend to use it for is to make phone calls & surf the mobile web.

The iPad kind. Though, the one I'm looking for in the future is both. It'll be the replacement to my "convertible" laptop I currently use.
Only sucky thing is, getting true writing/drawing ability on a tablet format currently is expensive. However, OneNote + Stylus = God's Gift for students.

My Dell laptop is a one and a half years old, but people I see come up to me when I have it and say it's old and out of date. Problem with newer technology they have no idea how long stuff may last, so my "older" laptop is lasting longer than the stuff that these other people bought yesterday. Which also is part of the reason I'm not planning on being an artist/writer by living: the pay is too small to afford some of the things I would need, including replacing an entire $1000+ laptop if it goes down.
RIP Steve Jobs.
RIP Steve Jobs.
I hear you on early adoptions. Any time there's even a new OS I'm hesitant to upgrade because it is almost always rife with problems that the previous OS didn't have. I haven't even Lionized my Mac yet. Probably won't unless I need to for whatever reason (software compatibility)
Funny thing: very often unless you're buying the absolute tippy-top of the line for ridiculous bucks, you actually can often get better performance for your money out of a two-year old machine, using two-year old tippy-top of the line parts for CHEAP because jackasses like this ditch them in a hurry.
And quite literally downgrade themselves. Oops!
And quite literally downgrade themselves. Oops!
Exactly! Up until now, all of my computers have been hand-me-downs because my dad is a technology buff (not a mean one like mr. pig here because my dad has been in my shoes before too, he just can afford it now and LOVES computers ) so I have the privilege of getting his older technology for free, trade, or very cheap. I wanted my very own brand new laptop though that could run the latest Adobe Suite and none of his available hand-me-downs could support it, so I had to get a new one. He bought half for me for a Christmas present and said I could pay him back for the other half gradually. It's a process, but I'm grateful for the opportunity. It's a fine machine, and I can use the latest art programs! That aside, yes, I agree with you totally.
If you haven't already looked into it, consider in future 'whiteboxing' your laptop. Basically it's the same thing one does with any other sort of computer...Buy a case, buy a CPU, buy a HDD, buy RAM, put it all together and start installation.
Although if you're determined to stay with Macs, opportunities for such tricks are fewer. Not impossible. Not unheard of. Just rarer and hardly advertised.

THANK YOU!
someone who freakin agrees with me.
people always made fun of Me and My Brother cause we bought Apple Products.. my first one was the iPod Nano in Black... My Dad bought it for me when my Brother got one for Christmas from my Mom and Step Dad... I had it for a few Years and got a iPod Nano (4th generation) and SOLD my Old Model.. then I lost that iPod and got a iPod Tocuh and dropped it into a Dogs Dish -.- ... I still have it, all it needs is a New Battery but its still good... I now have a Used iPod nano (3rd generation) in Black...
when I got out of High School, for my Gift my Parents got me a Macbook Pro and I LOVE IT!!
M Brother got his back in 2008ish to 2009ish... and has had it for 2 Years and its still good, runs wonderful and looks new..
I got mine this Year and I just enjoy using it. I think its alot better then the HP Desktop we Own... I think my Parents should get a iMac.. but anywho my computer is 2GB's alot better then my Brothers xD .. but all in all me and his are the same and work awesome ^____^
what one do you have? mines the 13 Inch one..

15 inch. I sometimes hook it up to a large monitor but I like having the bigger screen when I'm working on arts, but the 17 inch was too much (since I still have to carry it around and it's heavy enough as it is). I got myself a bright red Speck hard plastic case for it so it looks really sleek :D
I replaced my main machine (a Mac), after using apple products for most of my life, with a Windows machine just a couple weeks prior to his death. Ohhh the stabbing guilt when I read of his death on my new non-Mac machine. :P
ANYWAYS, I adore your expression in the last panel. I'd make the very same expression if someone said that to me. And they have. "You don't have (insert latest, greatest, very expensive thing here)? How do you LIVE?!?"

Ooooh no D:
How are you liking it btw? I had a Windows machine for awhile, about 5 years. It wasn't my favorite interface but it was functional and long lasting! I'm just kind of computer dumb so I don't like having 6 million options to fix one problem. I'd rather have one way to fix it, and if that doesn't work "it's seriously fucked, take it to the Apple store". I get frustrated too easily x__x
I also get it when folks find out I don't have an iPhone. I would love one, but I can't afford the monthly plan. Ooooh the scowls I get when I bust out my crappy flip phone and have to T9 to text!

I'm... adjusting to Windows 7. I like how much easier it is to get good art software for this operating system (SAI is amazing). And I'm lucky because my partner is a Windows nerd so when I desperately can't figure out something I go grumble at him, usually ends in me saying "but I could do this on my Mac in two clicks!" I used to work tech support so I (mostly) know how everything works, and my google fu is amazing, so I get by. I miss my Mac dearly, but I'm sad to say that I just can't afford the price tag. :( The computer I have now was built from scratch here at home, compares in hardware to the Mac Pro line, and was nearly 1/5th the price.
I hear ya on the iPhone thing, too. I wanted one since the day they came out in 2007, finally got one this year. Figured once I paid off one big debt that was eating at me every month that it would be okay-ish to sign on for one. It's my baby, though. I don't care if it's outdated or whatever, I still get excited like a kid on Christmas every time I pull it out. People think I'm silly for how excited I get over it, because they've had a smartphone for years and years, but I think they just take it for granted.

I can completely relate, at least with my old phone. I used a Nokia 6010 (a "brick", all it did was calls) well into the smart phone and iPhone era and always took crap for it from the people I worked with but when we were working out in the middle of nowhere I would be the only one with reception.
The only thing I worry about 5+ year old tech is when people insist on paying money to repair the thing. No offense, but if it's that old, when it goes kaput...let it die. You'll probably spend 3x the cost of a superior product trying to get your old lunk up to speed. I understand if it's a proprietary product (ie. you *need* that old POS), but when it comes to computers/tech in general its usually not the case.
For instance...adding more RAM to a Pentium 3 computer. Why? You're already halfway to a better computer once you buy the "upgrade".

I don't upgrade/fix anything that costs money. If it has a problem that can be fixed by messing with it at home, at no cost, sure. But I've never been one to really repair computers because its a money sink on ANY computer you buy after about 1 year because technology changes so fast.
I wouldn't mind have an apple laptop but I personally can't justify spending nearly $1000.00 to replace the 5 year old gateway laptop I'm currently using. Other than the occasional software glitch here and there I'll keep on using it till it rolls over and goes tits up. Can't stand people who brag about having the easily disposable income to get the newest gizmo or gadget that has come out.
I agree.. And I'm never like this, ever. I love technology, but I understand people use the same machine for years and years. As long as you're responsible with it [taking care of it, etc], and you're not trying to run programs that are not fit to be run on your machine [like it maxes out the CPU or RAM, etc] then by all means use it until you can't use it anymore!
As a computer repair tech, I will say I'm biased toward Windows/Custom machines against Apple, because it's more or less paying for a fashion accessory more than you're paying for performance/reliability. But both are good computers, just don't fall for the myth that Macs are BETTER for art, when really, they aren't any better than a Windows based machine. That's one thing that will always make me facepalm, when typical people [those who don't know much about IT in general], try to tell me that Macs are superior or better at something, thus making it worth the extra 500+ dollars. [in my home-built machine, I paid less than 800 altogether. For a similar spec'ed Mac, 1500 minimum. If I was gonna pay that much for a computer with the same specs, it better give me foot massages and call me God every day. lol]
But I'm happy to hear you're one of many people who keep their machines for a long time. I don't like seeing perfectly fine running machines being discarded unless they're being donated to a good cause and such. This goes for any computer, whether it's Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.

Having used both mac and Windows platforms for art, I can honestly say I don't see a difference in quality. I will say though that it's easier for me to use Mac in my (normal) job because I run into more Macs in the design industry than Windows based machines, Mac is generally pretty standard. I can answer Mac questions if there needs to be troubleshooting, but don't ask me to fix anything on a Windows platform XD
lol. That's true for any area where bias happens. Like, a German Shepherd lover could answer just about any question about GSDs, but be completely hurrdurr with questions about, say, bichon frise dogs.
And a lot of people still believe that Macs are superior to Windows machine for art, safety, and reliability. Whenever I tell them that Windows machines are technically safer, and just as reliable and capable of art tasks as a mac, they scoff at me. They don't understand that macs are becoming more and more vulnerable to virus and hacking attacks the more popular they become. I just laugh at people who say "Well Macs can't get viruses!" The ignorance astounds me XD Considering hackers can make viruses and attack macs quite possibly easier than windows machines since a lot of them are without protection. The only protection Macs had for a while was their rarity.
Oh look it, I'm rambling lol. Glad you're not one of the people who've fallen into the whole cliche of Macs > Windows. It's refreshing, and I can definitely understand that you'd prefer Macs because you understand them. Inside the hardware's the same just organized differently, the OS on the other hand is quite different. Though if you ever run into an issue with a Windows machine, you can always ask me! lol

I wonder when the switch flicked over from "oh my god, they're coming out with ANOTHER upgraded model? I just bought this last year! UGH, slow down!" to "OMG this phone is 6 months old already i need a new one UGH!!" Because I remember distinctly when things were the former. Maybe it's just the internet era where everything seems "old" the minute you see & experience it, but this "gotta have the new thing NOW" mentality DOES get old. Especially for those of us on artist budgets. ;)
I just laugh it off at this point, most of those people who have to have the newest tech also don't use half its potential...I'm a Game developer and have pushed every machine i've ever owned to the point where it has literally crashed under the strain, but even I don't do that every day. My primary machine is a year and a half old and still does it's job right, and on top of that the last 3 machines I bought are still in use, one 6 years old is being used as a server.
fav'd for the artwork and the description
my macbook is a 2007 model. after that disaster in december i got it more storage and more memory and its awesome and runs great
my tablet pc is also a 2007... had no problems with it until last week
my ipod is a classic. 4 years old, no issues, still awesome
so yeah i totally agree with you <3
I don't even see why people feel the need to upgrade and replace so often. Computers are not moving nearly as fast as they were 10 years ago.
My rig is about 2 years old now and at the time of buying I went "upper mid-range". Now, it might not be the NEWEST THING OMG but performance wise? It's absolutely still upper mid-range. Things are just not changing fast enough to warrant throwing your money away on unnecessary upgrades.

There's a small percentage that upgrade or replace because they're into games and thus, need an upgrade after 2 years. I'll pro'lly need to upgrade my machine here shortly, and I just built it nearly 2 years ago. Thing with computers is, even though they work, the hardware quickly becomes obsolete and thus, needs upgrading if you want to play that fancy-shmancy new game that's coming out. Of course, a 2 year old computer will be able to play the game relatively fine, on minimum settings, but people don't want minimum settings and so, they go out and get new stuff. But like I said, this is a small percentage of people. Most of them are just people who get their rocks off on having the latest and greatest. lol
Like I said: the technology is not changing as fast as it used to. My computer at 2 years old can run new titles on the recommended (not minimum) settings, and a similar rig costs basically the same now as it did then. It easily runs WoW or comparible with everything on max. I guess if you're buying a budget PC then you might find yourself outmoded by now, though.
Actually, it IS changing as fast as it used to... If not faster. General rule of thumb for a computer is, it's considered out-dated once it hits 4 years of age [and that also means for the typical user, not just gamers]. But it varies from machine to machine, and from person to person. WoW and comparable games aren't what I'm talking about as far as gaming goes, as WoW's minimum requirements are fairly low enough that a computer from 5 years ago would be able to run it, perhaps not at max, but still run it relatively okay.
Even for the recommended requirements, machines from 2-3 years ago would definitely be able to run it perfectly fine on max and then some. The games I'm talking about, however, are those that have recommended requirements calling for a quad core processor, 3+ gigs of RAM, etc to run the game at max. Which computers from 2 years ago probably won't be able to run at max, but at low settings.

Thats how idiots talk tech. Anyone worth talking to can still appreciate way out of date hardware that was ground breaking or which did something great with limited resources. Tosspots own the most expensive everything, you can tell someone who knows their parts by how cheaply they built a machine that does the job.

Completely agree. My old desktop was barely keeping up when I first got it. Didn't replace it till like 6-7 years after I got it because by then it had become completely outdated; nothing worked with it anymore. Was so sad to have to toss it out. =(
I'm still using the exact same monitor though. Go figure.
I'm still using the exact same monitor though. Go figure.
That Alienware desktop "gaming PC" I got back in Sept-ish of 2004 was like, the COOLEST MOST BADASS OMG EVER machine I could get with my parents' OK and I wish I had been more grateful. Used to be this way. Still love technology, but I feel old now because new phones and such come out touting entire freaking 2.2GHz processors (a PHONE, let's repeat, p-h-o-n-e thats ALL IT NEEDS TO DO) and I'm worried that I won't be able to understand a "new" Walmart prepay phone I bought that's not even "Smart". Too much too soon. That Alienware, btw, lasted me until 2010 or so and that's really not bad I think, especially with hardware failing and my complete Windows-idiocy. For a while I'd whine because I wished I could upgrade the hardware but one day I tried to install a new program and couldn't, got fed up and threw a tantrum only to discover that I would really need an entirely new MOTHERBOARD to install it and I was greatly disappointed that "it's not -that- old, why can't I just upgrade it and not hassle with upgrading EVERYthing else?" I finally put the PC down and gutted my hard drive because it was a big 40lb or so shell of electronics I'd never use again because in 2008 I got excited and pre-ordered an Axiotron ModBook. Sure, perhaps a MBP with Wacom tablet would have been a much more practical buy (as I got those first-release ickies which were repaired, it's HEAVY, limited sensitivity, external keyboard needed if I want to -really- type) but I now still shrug and use the hell out of my ModBook despite it being several "gens" behind on Apple's lineup. Who knew they're looking to add USB3 to computers? I read it on a package and asked what I needed to do to upgrade my laptop's USB from 2.0 to 3.0 and guess what..I friggin' can't! >:C I refuse to use new stuff unless a) gifted or b) I am forced to in order to use my regular and basic functions. Dammit.
And yep last face really does accurately portray that sharp under-the-breath inhale you do when you realize "oh god I don't want in this situation any more, escape..escape.." :D Love it.
I wonder if those people get annoyed with constantly re-personalizing their machines?

The technology race can be such a pain. Even if I had the money (which I don't) I'd rather not be an early adopter. If you wait a bit a cheaper version sans the bugs usually comes out.
On an amusing note I held on to my last desktop for seven years before deciding to upgrade. (The desktop still works-- it just needed a new power supply.) My upgraded desktop which I got a little over a year ago has been a constant headache. Between shipping it back to California for constant repairs and switching out components on my own (including a new motherboard) after my warranty expired, my $650 dollar desktop suddenly cost close to $1000. Meanwhile that computer I bought back in 2003 works just fine (even if it has trouble with HD video) and the laptop I bought in 2008 is also fine. Newer isn't always better. X_X

I've been trying to save up for an Apple Mac laptop for some time,
but I've absolutely NOTORIOUS for being a rather impulsive buyer.
However, there should be a few juicy commisions coming my way,
so I should have a bit more disposable income to put towards it
(touch wood)

I had a Mac Mini, one of the original Intel chip models, and it came with Tiger and two 256 MB RAM cards, which I upgraded to a single 2 GB card later. I had it since it came out in '08, and only the other day died on me (because I was fucking with it, I took it apart again and had the power connected while moving it about, fried it needlessly). It came with Tiger, and I got Leopard and Snow later when they came out.
I'm only now looking to buy a new Mac. :O
